WD 500G HDD suddenly un-readable; changed name to local disk, says I need to format in order to use it. I have tons of important stuff on there.

Could you confirm if the problem with the drive not being recognized is a problem with the USB cable? I have a 250GB passport and it worked fine with my XP. Once I decided to reformat it to NTFS and tried to do so by plugging into my new windows7 laptop the problems started.

I purchased 2 WD elements 1TB. I have pluged it

right click on the drive , format it and it should work, if this not solves your problem go to the shop and use your warranty, it may be broken.

Can't retrieve data

Be sure to use the WD supplied USB cable to connect the drive. I had a similar problem with my WD Passport 320 and was told that using a cable other than that short 8 inch cable can cause some odd operations.

WD 500gb external hard drive 'elements' not recognised by laptop

Windows 98 does not properly work with drives > approx. 130 GB. This has something to do with the FAT* being not large enough for more cluster entries.

*(FAT = File Allocation Table; this tells the computer in which clusters on the HD a file is stored. What is the FAT good for? A computer stores files on HD like a very messy person: The first next free space is used; if it is not sufficient, the second next free space and so on. This leads to fragmentation, i.e. one file may be stored on many different sections of the HD. But unlike a messy person the computer keeps good track of where he puts all the pieces; this list is the FAT.

Here's how I worked around that problem: Partitioned them so that each partition was about 125 GB. Also: Cluster size must be 32 kB; if it is smaller you get more clusters and the FAT can't handle so many.

For example I have a 500 GB hard disk that is partitioned into four 122 GB partitions (just to be on the safe side; a couple of GBs not allocated). This works trouble-free.

You might do the partitioning with Windows's FDISK, though it gives you wrong indications about partition sizes. Use percent values (e.g. ''24%'' when specifying the required partition size in FDISK.

A partitioning utility I can recommend for ease and reliability is Acronis Disk Director Suite.

WD ELEMENT DOESNT POWER UP. GREEN AND BLUE LIGHT FLASHES

Have you contacted WDE.. by email,or, phone? Seems like that the hard drive has had its bios info corrupted , due to possibly hooking it up to the pc(in the wrong order), or even, a power surge that you were not aware of... The Manufacturer can send you a link to upgrade/restore the harddrive bios...

Malfunctioning WD passport that windows doesn't detect.

Inside the case is a regular laptop size harddrive.
Laptop harddrives are 2.5 inches across. (2-1/2 inches. Desktop harddrives are 3.5 inches)

I would suggest the external enclosure the harddrive is in, is defunct.
I would suggest buying a new external enclosure, and putting this harddrive in it. Then just plug the USB cable in, (As you did before), and download your data, to be ready to transfer.

You need an external enclosure that is Sata, and is for a 2.5 inch harddrive. These are relatively inexpensive.
Let me show you some examples:

Will the ms9327e + (usb) support a SATA drive?

well it depends on what board you have.

your best bet is to look on the motherboard.

the SATA connection looks almost identical to the connection on the harddrive, so you can use that for reference.

on the harddrive you will see 2 plugs. the smaller one plugs into the motherboard and the larger one is power.

for power, power adaptors are made to convert the standard 4 pin connector to a SATA one.
