Well,
I reconmend to go to www.hayes.com and ask them if they have your book for the 99.
If the book says 96-99. that would tell me no, but if the book says 97-2002 then I would say yes you would be able to change, but I believe there will be some minor differences which the book or your mechanic could tell you

Need a tranmission for 1996 sl ser.

these are sold used at junkyards, or recyclers as they are now called, and are sold rebuilt at transmission shops. more than a little work to swap them in and out.

there is a different gear ratio for the SOHC SL1 and the Dohc SL2, make sure donor car is the same engine type as yours. and the transmission should be the same, auto or manual, or you have a lot of refitting to do.

Cna you use a transmission from an s model car to put in a sl edition

Probably possible. The tranny in my '95 Saturn SL2 failed at 30k and the engine blew at 57k while starting. Hope you have better luck; no more GM for me.

I have a crack engine. Need to put in another engine. Will a 2001 engine fit into a 1998 saturn sl1

No, you need a 96 through 98 engine, make sure the one you get is the same as yours, that is if you have an SL1 your donor car must be an SL1, SW1 or SC1 and if you have an SL2 then your donor car must be an SL2, an SW2, or an SC2. You can buy rebuilt engines for about 2000 with core exchange
might make more sense if you intend to keep it a while and if a manual then do the clutch while it is out.

What type of engine do I have in my 1998 Saturn SL1?

if it is an SL1 it has a SOHC 1.9L. Basically the same engine was in all saturns 91-99, just different heads. the Sl2 had double over head cam and the Sl1 had SOHC.

What's the difference bteween a 99' saturn sl and a saturn sl1? My 99' saturn sl wont go in reverse, what might be wrong with it?

The SL2 is a DOHC 1.9L and the SL1 is a SOHC 1.9L. They have different transmissions, the DOHC uses a 15 inch wheel while the SOHC has a 14 inch wheel. So when you are shopping around for another transmission you must get one from the same type of engine. Saturn auto transmissions seem to be problematic, I stuck with the manual trannys and had very good luck.

I have a 1993 saturn manual transmission and when

Time to find a much lower mileage used tranny and have it put in. Replace the clutch components with new stuff while you are at it.Note that the transmissions 91-99 will most likely swap but you must know whether you have an SL1 or SL2 and the donor car must be the same..

WANT TO PUT A 1996 LS -1 SATURN, MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND MOTOR INTO A 1995 LS-2 SATURN BODY AND CHASSIS. WILL I HAVE TO CHANGE THE COMPUTER? DOES THE DESIGN CHANGE FROM 95 TO 96 EVEN MAKE IT POSSIBLE...

There isn't much difference between them. The SL series didn't change between 95 and 96 except for the ecm is OBD2 on the 96. Are both cars stick shift? The difference in the SL1 and the SL2 are the cams. 1 for sohc and 2 for dohc. So what you are asking is can I take out my dohc motor and install a sohc motor right?

Chaged transmission on 1997 saturn now it will not

It sounds like you have the wrong transmission. If your car is a DOHC aka an SL2, SC2, or SW2 then you have an MP7 transmission. If you have a SOHC, aka a SL1, SC1, or SW1 then you have an MP6. You need the right transmission for the right motor...DOHC needs the MP7 while the SOHC needs the MP6.

On top of that, you need the correct gear ratios which changed over the years. Your '97 CANNOT use a '98-'02 transmission. It must be 1991-1997 if it is an MP7 or 1993-1997 if it is an MP6.

Otherwise the PCM will not shift the wrong transmission.
