I am trying to transfer videos from my Sony Handycam Model DCR-TRV340 to my computer using firewire as recommended, but my cam also has USB streaming also. I have been unable to transfer using either one. Do I have settings wrong for either transfer method, or what?

If you are trying to download by the usb cable you will need this driver for connectivity ...(up to windows XP) after installing you will find the storage of teh camera listed in MY computer folder..or ..use the windows movie maker..or the manager that came on disk with the camera to download...This will not support streaming ..streaming on thi smodel is made only by the firewire..
If the camnera wasnt found on firewire..than the issue is to install the software ..and also to be sure that the firewwire port is enabled...
For that ..go to bios by pressing F2 for laptops..and del for desktops..and in there locate and start a feature named optimal factory defaults ...confirm the action ..and save the changes with F10 ...
This should enable the port if it was disabled...after that you should be able to connect the camera via firewire...but remember you still need the software to make the import..or to download..
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=DCRTRV340&SelectOS=7
here you will find the software for connectivity and the utility for streaming ..
Just select the operation system and download them ..

Try to download nad install driver for your camcorder. I porvided you a link below. According to Microsoft the drivers for the device are already installed. However Sony states that the camcorder's USB streaming feature can not be used and the device does not even show up in My computer.

More information can be found at Sony's support website or at Microsoft's Windows Support website

All the best!

General Information:
I understand that you're trying to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the USB Cable.

The USB Streaming of this Camcorder is not compatible with the Vista and Windows 7 Operating Systems.

However, you can transfer the videos to the Computer using the i.LINK(Firewire) cable or A/V Cable.

How to transfer video from vide cam to pc?

The camcorder has i.Link (FireWire) high-speed digital connection for transferring video in digital format to your computer or standalone DVD recorder in real time with no loss in quality. Also present are USB 1.1 (for picture download and video streaming) and A/V/S-Video outs.
So the way to do it ..its by firewire..and a proper software to manage it ...it came with the camera on a disk

UNABLE TO TRANSFER VIDEO FROM SONY HANDYCAM DCR TRV TO MY LAPTOP

If you want to use the USB cable to connect the Camera to the Computer to transfer the video to the Computer then:

This Camcorder does not support USB streaming with the VISTA Operating System. Use an i.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. The i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port. (An i.LINK is a black D shaped connector with 4 or 6 pins. The type of cable to be used will depend on the i.LINK port of your Computer. The Sony Camcorder will have the 4 pin i.LINK cable and if the computer has the 6 pin i.LINK port, then you may have to use the 4 pin to 6 pin i.LINK Cable).

You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Computer.

Refer this link for the instruction to transfer the video to the Computer using i.LINK cable.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C111893

NOTE: As the Camcorder does not support USB streaming with Vista, it is not required to use any Sony Device Driver to transfer the video to the Computer. You do not require any Drivers or Software from Sony to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer using the i.LINK/Firewire interface.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Driver for DCR-HC28

It's not possible to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Vista running Computer using a USB connection.
The Camcorder uses the USB STREAMING function to transfer the videos to the Computer. The Vista doesn't support the USB STREAMING function.
However, you may transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using an i.LINK/FIREWIRE cable.

If your Computer has an i.LINK/FIREWIRE port on it you can connect the Camcorder to the Computer using the i.LINK/FIREWIRE cable.

The i.LINK port is a D shaped port labelled as DV, i, IEEE1394, Firewire.

If the i.LINK port on the Computer has 4 pins on it, then you can use a 4-pin to 4-pin i.LINK cable.
If the i.LINK port on the Computer has 6 pins on it, then you can use a 4-pin to 6-pin i.LINK cable.
The i.LINK port on the Sony Camcorder is a 4-pin i.LINK port.

I will forward a link to a page where you can get the steps to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the i.LINK connection.

Video transfer

If you're using a Windows Vista Operating System it'snot possible to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the USB connection. The videos from the tape camcorders cannot be transferred to Windows Vista Operating System as there is no USB Streaming ooption available on the Windows Vista Operating System. The Camcorder uses the USB Streaming function to transfer the videos to the Computer. You may wish to purchase a i.LINK/Firewire cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer in order to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer.
or
There is an update for driver on the Sony website to transfer the videos from the Camcorder to the Computer using the USB cable.
http://support.sony-europe.com/dime/downloads/downloads.aspx?site=odw_en_GB&m=DCR-HC42E&f=usbdrven_vista

You may also try installing the driver update for the Camcorder. The i.LINK cable gives a better video transfer qulaity than the USB transfer. The i.LINK cable used to connect the Camcorder to the computer depends on the number of pins available on the i.LINK/FIREWIRE port on the Computer. The i.LINK port on the Computer is a D shaped port which is labelled as i, DV, IEEE1394 and Firewire.
