Question about Moen Posi-Temp Single HandleTub And Shower Faucet

1 Answer

I replaced a Moen shower cartridge with a Danco 88675 part. It stopped the leak, but ever since the repair I have water hammer in the pipes when I shut all the upstairs fixtures off. I have bled the pipes 3 times and even taken the Danco cartridge out to see if there was a problem with it, all with no luck. Could it be the cartridge?? Any suggestions on a fix?

The cartridge is the culprit. Replace it with an OEM Moen cartridge. What happens is that some replacement cartridges may not operate the same as the moen brand when they are in the closed position. This can sometimes result in the water hammer effect you are experiencing. Change the cartridge and it should alleviate the problem. If it doesn't work let me know and we will go at it from a different angle.

You probably have a Danco cartridge. Danco parts are available from some "Big Box" home improvement stores.

What type of hammer arrestor do I buy to fix banging pipes after installing a new Moen posi-temp cartridge?

Banging pipes are a result of improper piping support. If the piping is secured, the banging will stop. If your only option is to install chambers for water hammer, any will do. Their only purpose is to hold air.

if you have copper piping, you probably twisted the pipe when, you tightened the spout ,and broke pipe. If you are'nt able to get into the wall on the shower side, cut a hole on the other side of shower wall to repair it.

You will need to remove the old cartridge from inside the shower valve body and either refurbish it with new rubber seals and O rings or replace the cartridge altogether (preferable). It's not a complicated fix but the Posi Temp cartridge can be a bear to remove. Moen and Danco make special 'pullers' to make the cartridge removal go a little easier (sold at Lowes/HD and plumbing supply for anywhere between $15 and $35 but well worth it, IMO).

I'm not aware of any problems with non moen replacement parts being the cause for a water hammer problem. Start with the simplest and cheapest correction which is using a moen replacement cartridge. If the water hammer persists then you may have to install a water hammer arrester in the plumbing system. This is basically a shock absorber in the plumbing system to stop the effect of water hammer. An arrester will cost you around $10 to $15 at your local plumbing supply shop. If you are not comfortable soldering copper then you will want to hire a licensed plumber to complete the work for you.

I had the same type of problem with an older toilet in my house. It developed a water hammer when it shut off after filling the tank. I replaced the fill valve with a generic universal replacement for about $10 and it stopped. Again sometimes the simplest fix will work. Let me know how it works out.

Installed new Moen posi-temp cartridge. Hot & cold water is correct but water will not shut of*** the way.

I just had the same experience, except I used a non-Moen cartridge. (It was from Ace Hardware, and Ace told me that Danco was the manufacturer.) When I pulled the cartridge back out, one of the two hard plastic seals on the side of the cartridge had torn, presumably on the sharp metal opening on the water supply pipe. I'm guessing there's something wrong with one or both of the seals on your new cartridge.

Leaks again

This is almost always caused by debris in the plumbing from the pipes or the water heater.

Sometimes it is caused by a defective OEM cartridge. Always buy genuine Moen parts.

Remove and inspect the cartridge. While it is out, briefly turn the water to the valve back on to insure the valve is free of particles and then reinstall. If the drip persists you will need to replace the cartridge again. Always flush the valve before installing new parts.

no one ever really figured out why this happens, but you can purchase a "hammer arrestor" to solve this problem. they work good and believe it or not they are best installed at shower valve. good luck
