Question about MotorGuide STANDARD MOTOR REPLACEMENT PARTS SWITCHES AND COMPONENTSDescript

1 Answer

I have a Motortguide 54 lb thrust motor. It takes a KT 150-02 switch, which I thought was bad since my medium speeds 3 and 4 did not operate. It's not the switch, but it's the wiring functions in the bottom of the motor where the prop is located. There are two sets of wirings in lthe bottom, similar to a starter with the graphite brushes. One of the wiring configurations draws 6 volts and the other draws roughly 8.5. 8.5 is too much and it has, in some cases melted the solder of the copper wires which feeds my medium speeds 3 and 4. Motorguide has corrected the problem part, but I don't know how to install the part, nor do I know which ball of copper wires it is. Is it the prop side ball of copper or is it the back side wires? How do yhou install this part?

Hey Chris,, you are starting a project (or wanting to) that is going to be problematic... It will be easier to go buy a new trolling motor with the money you are going to spend attempting this conversion... the newer trolling motors are so much more efficient...

Motorguide Trolling motor has low thrust in all five speeds

I have a 4 speed with 48 lbs of thrust. On mine, 1 through 3 will move me out pretty well, however, 4th is similar to an overdrive gear in a car or truck and is meant more for maintaining a speed with less draw on the amps.

I certainly wouldn't want to take off with it. I suspect it is the same with your 5 speed. The boat needs to be up to speed and then those two gears will maintain it, with 5th being optimal as far as low draw in amperage.
