Might seem silly, but one problem I run across every now and then is someone overfills the oil in their small engine equipment. This can cause the compression to be so high that it can't even crank. Or if it does start, it will smoke, spit oil out the exhaust, run erratically and make a mess.

If it is the same as some other briggs engines, check the valve clearances. Some of these have a compression release lobe on the cam at low RPM that assist in starting. If the valves are even a little out of adjustment, then they dont release and you have a hard to crank situation.

Could be timing but also could be the compression release isn't working. I'd download a manual from the Briggs & Sratton web site

Why won't my Ariens 46 in 20 hp BS eng. turn over when key is turned to start?

It could be several things. First see if the safety switches work One switch should be under the seat. The second could be a bad solenoid which will not allow the current to go through the wire. Thirdly the battery connector could have a break in it. Electrical problems can be tricky to track down.

What makes a lawnmower engine try to run backwards? I prime the carburetor, give the rope a tug, and the engine about rips my arm off. What is going on?

An out of time engine can "kickback" drastically at times and the painful result is not fun. Fortunately, there are a couple things to check for to insure the timing is correct. You will have to remove the top engine cover and inspect the slot in the top of the crankshaft. You may also have to remove the starter cup and its nut to view it. The slot in the crank should be aligned with the inside slot in the flywheel, and they should be held together by a small aluminum key in between them. If your mower has come to an abrupt stop lately while running at speed, the key may have "sheared" or broken if you will and need to be replaced. That is what it is designed to do. A very cheap part, and not hard to replace either. The other timing scenario to be quite concerned with is the OHV valve adjustment. I presume this 24HP is an OHV engine. These engines have a built in compression release that operates at low engine speed and then cancels when the engine is up and running, whether pull start, or electric start, they incorporate that feature. If the valves need adjusting (and they do periodically), then timing is a little off and kickback can occur. Briggs has several charts and instructions regarding the setting of the adjustable valves in an engine with OHV. Check on these 2 items and your kickback problem should be resolved.

Briggs 21 hp OHV motor will not start after internal work.

most likely that the timing is not correct
you line up the dots on the crank gear and the cam gear not the flywheel and the the crank shaft dot
the plug will spark every time the flywheel magnet passed the coil

Husqvarna YTH 2448 charging/starting problems.

I have just came through the same scenario. I replaced the regulator, but that wasn't enough, I also had to remove the flywheel which exposed the altinator, the altinator was burned up. I don't know why, or how this happened. I went to the local Briggs and Stratton dealer and bought a new Altinator for $65.00, installed it and viola! charging again.
The whole job took about 3 hours, most of that time was finding the pullers and setting them up to break the flywheel free.

Good luck...
