Black ink volume unknown

Problem is you refilled the cart and didn't reset it properly so it looks like a new cart, check your other carts and see if gears or holes are wrong.

Canon MX850 willnotprint from Large Black Ink Cartridge - PGI-5BK

Ink Carts do act finicky at times. Especially Canon carts.
In many cases, the ink carts have a small fuse built into the back of the cartridge that opens up if the cart has been removed for any reason. Replacement Carts come with the fused portion reset, thus when you insert it into the printer, it works great. If the cart is FULL, it still may not be observed as full or new by the Printer itself. Best way is to use a new cart, not necessarily a Canon Brand. Use an inexpensive company like

I have used all of the larger black ink...how do I switch it to the smaller one?

The large black ink cart is for text, the small black ink cart is for photos. There is no way to "Switch". Replace the large cart before you clog or burn the print head. Because the carts have microchips, refilling is only for the strong minded individuals that have refilled on previous printers. Th learn on chipped printers has a steep learning curve. Give it a try if you want, though.

Large black ink tank is not being used by the printer.

The little cartridges are pigment for photo printing. The Large black cart is ink for plain paper (usually text) printing. If you select a photo paper in the print setup menu, you will use very little of the ink.
To check the function of the large cart print out a test sheet from the printer maintenance menu. You may need to run a head cleaning to get all the nozzles to work.
