Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a trusty iBook, running OX 10.4.11. This laptop has served me well when I travel, but I would like to upgrade the hard drive if this is possible. Unfortunately, the MAC expert who has helped me with small changes in the past, has evidently gone out of business. So I am turning to the experts in FixYa-land, for advice. I need to know whether I could get the hard drive upgraded, and if so (LOL) whether this is something I could do myself. Many thanks for any advice you can give me....

Hi,

Any changes done on the book yourself will void the warranty on the product, but I am pretty much sure that you would be aware of the above.

Please follow the article below if you feel really confident on doing the job, as any fault can kill the book:

please let me know if you need any other information. I would still recommend to go to a store nearby for this technical work.

Thanks very much e-ware for your prompt and helpful answer to my question. I really guessed it wouldn't be an easy solution, and a quick check of the link you provided confirmed my suspicion in spades! I will simply continue to use the iBook as is. It works very well, if a tad slowly, and I really don't want to deep six it.

Can I upgrade the operating system on the g3?

OS X 10.3 supports your machine... you may have problems if your hard drive is too small.... It looks like this OS will work with your G3 IF you have ample hard drive and memory..

Extracting hard drive data from inoperable iBook G4 Apple laptop

well there is a solution so first check the type of hard drive in your ibook and check if any of your friends have an ibook, if so replace hard drive with yours and you can extract your data if your hard drive is working.

good luck.

I was trying to install Mac OS X 10.3 on my G3 iBook, it did not work, and now neither does the iBook.

It sounds like you have a hardware issue of some sort - likely a bad hard drive, due to age. I would suggest taking the laptop to a repair shop (don't bother with the Apple Store, they'll tell you to buy a new laptop or just turn you away). Best of luck!

Your laptop is unable to find an operating system. Try booting from a start up disc and running the diagnostics on your hard drive.

You have a hard drive issue, this is why it freezes. DO you hear clicking sometimes in the laptop? I would get your hard drive looked at by a tech.

it means that the hard drive is not been recognized by the system and consequentially it doesn't allow you to do anything else.
as it is an old model, it is cheaper and more appropriate for you to get a new one.
but if you have feelings for it and you live in the London area, I will be happy to help you out...
Cheers!
