Thanks Don for the suggestions. Unfortunately Irobot thought it fit to disqualify my warranty only because I moved the product with me from the US to India. As the warranty was voided anyway I decided to open the product and find out what was wrong. it wasn't a problem of the voltage differential as I was anyway using a proper step down transformer. The problem was in fact silly and as a result of what I may call a bad piece of engineering. The dust had gone and settled in the areas of the switches and hence was not letting the switch operate!!

After I cleaned the area with a dry cloth the product is working again. Must say Irobot does not know how to handle customers.

Just a suggestion, it could be that the internal battery is bad and not taking a charge, or like a laptop computer the a/c adaptor or power cord could be faulty. You have to be the judge on what would it cost to repair the vacuums including parts and labor, is the vacuum covered under a one year factory warranty? So I would check with your local vac dealer and also check the factory warranty to see if the item is still under the factory warranty. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

New Roomba Battery Not Holding Charge - charged once then died

It is possible for the charging system inside the roomba to call it quits. What I did to remedy this, since my roomba was out of warranty and I did not want to scrap it, was to buy a charging base on ebay. This charging base accepts different types of roomba batteries and even the scooba battery. The inconvenience is if you have a newer model roomba that has the battery inside, then you will need to remove the screws on the bottom plate to remove the battery. Hope this helps.

I noticed my run time was getting shorter and shorter, within the first 6 months. I checked my charger and base with a V.O.M. okay. About 4.4 volts on the base about 14 volts on the direct line. I bought...

To extend Roomba's battery life and keep Roomba cleaning at peak performance: • Always keep Roomba plugged in when not in use. • Recharge Roomba as soon as possible. Waiting several days to recharge Roomba can damage the battery. • For storage off the charger, remove the battery from Roomba and store in a cool, dry place. • Blue or black batteries should be stored after Roomba has been used. • Yellow batteries should be stored after being fully charged.
16-Hour Refresh Charge If Roomba has been left off the charger for an extended period, Roomba will initiate a special 16-hour charge cycle. This extensive charge refreshes Roomba's battery and extends the battery life. While charging, Roomba's "Clean" button will pulse quickly. Note: For best results, do not interrupt this Refresh Charge.

Seems to charge but then wont come on

Sounds like you bought a defective battery
You can test for this by removing the battery and holding the power button for 15 seconds. This will restart the charging cycle as if the battery were new. If it still goes red get a refund and a new one.

Roomba does not do anything

My Roomba has had a battery issue for some time now. I haven't used it in quite a while (months, years, I don't know for sure) because it would complain of a discharged battery after only a few minutes of cleaning. However, now when I finally tried to use it again, a new problem appeared.

Now, it charges normally, if I plug the cord directly into the Roomba. It will not mate with the home base, however, even if I place it on the contacts manually.

When I start it, all the buttons come on green. I then press a button to make it begin cleaning. The motor whirs up and runs for about 1 second, then it shuts down. About one second later, the power light and lights behind whichever button(s) I pressed (to give it a job) flash green then the system sits silent, and doesn't do anything else.
