You must have an older system. There is a battery built into the control unit (not user replaceable) that stores the system programming in case of a power outage. When the battery is dead, your system will lose all programming and default to assigning the first 2 lines to all phones. The system will have to be completely reprogrammed.
Please Note: Now would be a good time to install a UPS/Battery Backup unit on the phone system. I recommend a large enough unit to keep the phones running for at minimum of 2 hours during a power outage. Install the UPS/BB first, and then reprogram the system (so it won't have to be reprogrammed twice). Good Luck!

When I pick up my nortel norstar phone m7324 line 6 lights up can I change this to line 1?

In tech programming (Config) you need to got to the Line data and remove lines 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 from the pool it is in, make it none.
Note if line 1 is in use then you cannot call out.
Note sure why you would want line 1 as your outbound, systems are to use the bottom lines out and work their way up and inbound starts at the top and works their way down.

If you dont know how to program or the password call your local vendor in for a 1 hour charge.

If there is some strange reason then state what the setup or issue is and we can see if there is a work around.

On the cross connect do you have a CO connected to that line. That is most likely the cause of no dial tone. If you don not know how to check that call a phone system expert to connect and verify your system.

Power outage now you have to select a line manually instead of just picking up phone and it's taking awhile before it starts ringing

What usually happens after a power outage is the system defaults because the backup battery in the memory card is dead. That means 2 lines only on every phone, pulse dialing, and all phones ring. If your system looks like that, it's time to call the Nortel repair tech. He can replace the battery or software module with a new one and reprogram the system.

Norstar phone m7324 1. What is the difference between the name of the "line" and the name of the "set"? 2. Is there a way to reset the lines other than unplugging the phone system? Four lines are showing...

1. You can name the lines, for example (Line 1, Line 2) - or - (5551234, 5551235). You can also name the sets (phones), so when Joe calls Mary, Joe's phone will display "Calling Mary", and Mary's phone will display "Joe calling".

2. Press the line button for the line in use and the display will show which extension is using that line. There could be a stck button on a phone that is tying up the lines. When you figure out which extension is causing the problem, try unplugging it to see if that clears the problem (it should). Then get the trouoble phone repaired. Good Luck!

We just bought an m7324 system (on order, used) and wanted to know the wiring req'ts for the jacks - 6 conductor? 8? straight through or crossed?

The nortel system is a digital system which only requires 1 pair (pins 4 and 5) to power the telephone set. Only when a cap is used on a set is the second or third pairs used. The sets aren't polarity sensitive but, it never hurts to keep your wiring straight through.

Line in Use

It's possible that the last caller, never gave the system the "Disconnect" it needs from the phone company. Try rebooting the phone system. Just pull power on it, let it sit for 10 seconds, then reapply power.

Since power outage phone lines do not ring - only to receptionist

Your system lost its programming. It will need to be reprogrammed completely. The lines are ringing on the extensions where I voicemail is, unplug voicemail and at least lines will ring in correctly.
