You may want to soak the (finish product) of the blanket in a warm soapy water (bar/bath soap is prefer). Let it stay for about 20 minutes or so. Do not wring or dry it in the machine. Use a fresh towel. Lay the towel on flat surface. Put the wet blanket on top of towel. Roll the towel together with the blanket and add a little pressure to the roll to get the excess water out of the blanket. If still need it take another fresh towel and do it the same way. Then, lay flat to dry. Warm water and soap usually will make the fiber to be less sheds. Good luck!

Do you need to wash fabric before laying it on the pattern?

Depends on the fabric...cotton shrinks quite a bit and some fabrics should not be washed, like some wools. And make sure you lay the pattern on top of the fabric...you have to be able to see the pattern to cut it.

I would love to get a pattern for a baby blanket for 800 gms of 8 ply wool with something like a fan flare pattern but a little less difficult. Tanks.

Search the internet for knit/crochet baby blanket patterns or visit the local craft store for pattern books.

My thread is looping underneath the fabric. I use a pfaff 1472. Would this be the needle?

Top tension is insufficient, so probably your top tension dial is either turned right down, gunked up or the thread isn't into it properly. Start by unthreading top thread, raising pressure foot, turn tension dial to 5 and thread again to just after the dial, then lower the pressure foot and pull the thread, is it very firm to tug? If there is no tension on it, then the dial is faulty.

If there is tension, then try sewing again, maybe it was just threading up issue.

If you can access the metal discs that make up the tension device, then turn down to zero and "floss" between them with the selvage edge of a clean piece of cotton fabric and see if any gunk comes out. Many black and dark threads will shed dye particles and if you have used cheap cotton this will shed too, gunking up the tension. Good practice to clean it out regularly.

I want to sew two pieces of fleece together and put blanket binding on with a decorative stitch. (Making a baby blanket). Thread breaks or skipping stitches. What needle and thread combination should I...

Take a look at the chart on needle and thread I posted as a tip, but generally, you'll need to use a larger needle, something like a 14 or maybe even a 16, but you shouldn't need heavy-duty thread.
