Question about Computers & Internet

3 Answers

My brother disassembled his Gateway w323 Ui1 laptop to put in more RAM and a dvd burner, but afterwards the laptop would not power on. When the power cord is plugged into it the light for the power supply comes on, but the on button won't turn on the computer. Any suggestions or possible solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Best solution would be to check that all the cables are plugged in correctly to the motherboard and also that the memory is properly inserted and the cable from the motherboard to the new dvd drive is inserted. Also check that the power button is correctly positioned.

Yes--take it apart again and check all the connections. As a general rule, if it worked and you "fixed it" and now it doesn't work, then you need to find out what you forgot to do when you put it back together.

Another thought--incompatible RAM.. Not all RAM is compatible. You should use memory sticks from the same manufacturer for stability and performance when possible.

When i move my Gateway W323-UI1 it freezes

that's BAD! it sounds like there's something loose inside your laptop. the only thing i can suggest is flip it over, unplug the power cord, remove all the panels from the back and the battery and shake it and see if anything falls out. while you're in there make sure that you ram chips are securely installed.

Could you tell me where I could get a user manual for a Gateway laptop, Model# W323-Ul1? Louise

The Gateway W323-Ui1 is also known as the Gateway MX3210,

http://support.gateway.com/support/manlib/Notebooks/MXModels/MXModels.shtml

(No, you did it right. The above page on Gateway is 'Flintstone's' looking)

On the above page scroll down to the heading - User Guides.

Now down to where it states - Notebooks - Gateway - MX3200 series

Click on the file name under this heading -

8511189 - Gateway Notebook Hardware Reference R0 Windows XP

This is a PDF file download. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.

After you click on the above link it may take up to 30 seconds before the first page comes up.
It may also take additional time for the file to fully download.

(Took 12 seconds just now. File fully downloaded in that time, with no extra download time needed.
Using medium speed DSL connection)

For additional questions please post in a Comment.

Gateway W323-UI1 battery shows charge at 100% but then when unplugged from AC adapter for 10 mins or so it says "critical battery" and if not plugged back into AC adapter right away laptop powers off...

You will need to calibrate the battery. When you boot the laptop, it will say very quickly to enter Setup press F2 (or Delete key) or similar. Do that, you will enter the BIOS. Look for battery calibration and run it. Can take a few hours.

Battery Charger

The adaptor supplies more voltage than is needed to charge your batteries and operate the PC so there is a circuit, often mounted on a small, separate board inside the unit that regulates voltage for the PC and monitors and regulates the charge current for the battery pack.

Testing the plug-in adaptor without a load (drawing current from it) is not a reliable way to test it since it could itself be defective and lose some or all of the 19 volts once required to deliver current.

You might try removing the battery pack to see if the PC will turn on without it.
The packs have thermal fuses internally that can fail preventing a charge to take place.

Depending on your laptop model, you may need to press a certain key combination (Fn-F4 or something like that) to enable or switch to the external display.

Look on your laptop's keyboard for a key with a picture that has an L-shaped icon on it (it's supposed to look like an open laptop from the side). Most times you will need to press the Fn or Function key and this key to trigger the monitor switch.
