it seems that youre monitor has a dry solder problem, try tapping it if the picture resumes to normal for a while than get it resoldered from a technician. if it soesnot solve problem than look out for a burnt resistance.

I assume the monitor is still plugged into the back of the system?

If so, do you get any beeps which can denote error codes for the system?  Put your ear to the monitor, any strange whinning noise?

If the HP has onboard video but you have an add-on video card, remove the add-on and connect the monitor to the onboard vid. If it works you have a bad add-on video card. If it doesn't or you are already running on on-board video hook the mx705 up to a compatible HP. The older PB may be TOO old to handle it or not hve the correct drivers.

Blank screen, no light indicating monitor is on, makes clicking noise when i click to turn on. It is a hp mx705.

It is either the power supply or the deflection circuit.
If you can read electronic circuits and know how to use a DVM. Check the power supply voltages and the deflection circuit for any short..
Best of luck.

HP MX705 ON MY DESKTOP JUST WENT BLACK AND BLANK. THE POWER LIGHT JUST BLINKS.

a CRT monitor  just like a CRT television when it fails may still have a light on the front panel operate   you probably had a catastrophic failure  usually small electrolytic capacitors near the horizontal output transistor dry up an cause the transistor to fail  the voltage regulator may also fail in the process

Monitor goes standby after boot

Look the problem it may not your monitor it's your windows XP. Let me guess you have a VGA/Svideo card. From prior experience I can tell you that dual output Nvidia cards will default to Svideo first, and then "adjust" your windows settings to do so every time even if a VGA monitor is re-connected (HIGHLY ANNOYING). So if the last thing you see before nothing is the Windows XP boot screen, here's how to fix it. Boot to safe mode uninstall your video driver, reboot then reinstall. You can substitute a system restore for uninstalling your drivers if you can remember when the monitor was last working. This really really pissed me off when it happened to me.

HP mx705 17 in.CRT Conventional Monitor vertical goes bad

While it is sounding like a hardware problem. I'll throw in my 2 cents. Have you check the cables from the power to the source and from the monitor to the computer. Just make sure those aren't loose. One other thing...you mentioned you turn off the computer "afterwards" then it fixes itself. Is the fix for longer than it turns on at first? or does it stay on longer then goes out? Let me know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
