My Sony PS-LX520 turntable skips with tone arm not moving

My Sony PS-LX520 turntable starts to skip after 1-2 minutes of playing, and appears that the tonearm is not moving forward as the record progresses thus causing the skip. Anything can I do to resolve this?

Yep - Just did the repair and it was as stated above. Had exactly the same problem you have and changing this tiny drive belt was the fix. I add more details and another source to find this belt:
I had the same problem and a review of forums and my experience with my own fix indicated that this is almost certainly your problem:
The roughly 2.6 inch (circumerence) drive belt (that connects a tiny motor to the worm screw that moves the tone-arm laterally when it gets the signal) likely needs replacement. Mine was intact but old and rigid enough to keep slipping or hang up the tiny motor. Unplug the unit - take out the 8-10 screws to take off the bottom - remove this little belt - scrub the pulleys with tripled-up sewing thread, and replace with new belt. This is a good source:
$6.50 (paypal available) for 2 belts to reach their minimum, free shipping, arrived in 2 days.
You might also want to clean and lightly grease the rail that the tone arm rides on, but this is unlikely to fix the problem without a replacement belt.

Check the needle, if its not that then you can check the tracking, the relationship between downward weight on the needle and lateral movement across the record. you will need the manual for the instructions
It can be tricky so if you are not sure then consult a good hifi shop or tech.

Hope this helps

This is mostly a quote from a post elsewhere. It reflects a concensus from other posts: The movement of the tonearm is controlled by a motor that drives a 3 inch-circumference belt,. In your case that belt is likely broke or stiff. Here is a replacement. If you can get the thing open (unplug it first!) you can probably do it yourself. Also clean and lightly grease the bar that the tonearm pulls itself across.

Marantz 530 skips after playing only 30 seconds the tone arm won't progress. It consistently stops (skips) regardless of whatever album at the same place

Make sure that the wires leading from the tone arm are not binding. And you might also want to check for bearing friction in the tone arm. Under light stylus pressure conditions, low friction is mandatory.

Every record skips in different places

You should look for an anti-skate control on the turntable and adjust that. It will be a question of trial and error with it as there is no fixed rules for these. The weight on the back of the arm should be set to the weight of your cartridge.

I have a JVC L-L1 turntable. The linear arm is quite sluggish and is actually making records skip. Any ideas other that replacing the motor?

I have this exact turntable. If the tone arm looks like it's not moving or not moving fast enough, it will make the record skip. It is NOT the turntable drive belt that is bad. It IS a 2nd belt that makes the tone arm assembly move. That belt is only about 1 3/4" diameter. I have yet to find one for mine. Turntable drive belts are readily available, but not this belt for some reason.

Regarding the poor sound quality (and possibly the skipping):
check the needle condition, see if exchanging it with a needle (or the entire pickup head) from a working turntable does any good.

Check the pickup connection pins (contacts on the pickup head and on the end of the wires coming through the arm from the unit), see if there is any dirt or oxydation and clean the contacts if necessary, also check for any damage to the wires.

As for the skipping - a heavily worn needle may affect the sound quality and cause skipping as well - if cahnging the needle (or the pickup head) doesn't make a change, try to realign the weight on the tone arm so that the pickup head will become a bit heavier, this could help somewhat (before you actually try to realign the weight, try to put a small coin or a small weight of some kind on the pickup head while it is playing a record, if the skipping goes away, you need to realign the tone arm weight).

This could also be a problem with the tone arm lifting mechanism (may be obstructed by something or damaged so it won't let the tone arm sit properly onto the record and "grab" the groove).

I just mentioned a few things you might want to check, but don't take anything for granted, the problem may as well be elsewhere in the unit.

Tone arm moves to the middle rather than the beginning

There is 33and 45. that's the size of the record. There should be a level to change from one to the other.

Turntable swingarm skips to last song

Most likely your stylus (needle) is bent, broken or missing. Check to see if it's there or not. If it's broken or damaged, you will need to replace it. Under the cartridge, you should see a small arm that has the actual diamond on the end of it. If the arm is there, but the diamond is missing off the end, the arm won't stay in the groove and will instead skip across the record to the middle.

Arm does not track properly but skips across records

Just guessing, but it sounds like you haven't counterbalanced your tone arm.  When a tone arm skips, it's usually because there's too much counter weight on the rear of the tone arm.  You want between 3-5 grams, but first you have to calibrate your tone arm (balance it so you know where zero is).  If you don't know how to do this, refer to the Ion directions called "Tonearm Setup" in the instructions.
