It depends on how "failed" the disk is.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service".
For much money, these companies can repair a disk-drive,
just long-enough to make one attempt to copy all the files
onto a new disk-drive.

SMART stands for 'Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology' and a bad status means that your drive has errors and is likely to fail soon. There is generally very little if anything you can do to repair such drives.
I recommend backing up any important data on the drive as soon as you can and replacing the drive.
Most computer repair shops will be able to retrieve data from a failing drive and supply and fit a new one for you, charges for these parts/services will vary depending on where you go.

Hard disk 1 (3f1) error on HP pavillion dm1 series

So, can you see it in My Computer? If yes, get your data off the drive and format it!

If you can't access your files, data recovery software can help.I used this one called Tenorshare Data Recovery to retrieve files off crashed HDD and it worked.
If needed, you can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your files can be recovered.Get it from http://www.any-data-recovery.com/product/datarecoveryprofessional.htm

Hard Drive Crash - wants to re-install how to retrieve data to laptop computer

If the HDD has failed you can't retrieve the data off the failed drive. You can send the HDD into a data recovery company and they will read the disk in the drive and put the info on DVD and sent it to you, but that is the only way. The service is quite expensive. Just do a google search for failed hard drive data recovery.

Our Hard drive is failing due to reported mechanical error ---- not software problems. Two companies have been unable to retrieve vital scientific data and a third company has stated it is impossible to...

There is not much you can do except try some other data recovery companies.
If your data is very important, in future you should consider doing data backups on a daily basis and/or build a fail safe computer or server system using RAID hard drives configured as a mirrored hard drives or a RAID 5 system with hot swappable hard drives. Also consider installing a UPS (uninterruptable power supply) to prevent a computer and server shutting down from power outages as this can will corrupt your data.
I hope you will take this advice seriously.

Boss 1180 Hard Drive Error

Im Sure You Solved This Problem But For Other User Yes There Is A Way To Save Your Data If Your Hard Drive Is Still Operable. You Can Put Your Boss Hard Drive Into Your Computer And Copy Its Contents To Your Computers Hard Drive. Some Say That If The Hard Drive Is Not Operating You Can Put It In A Ziplock And Then Stick It In The Freezer For An Hour Then Attempt To Retrieve Your Info. Remember Always Back Up Your Data On Hard Drive Recorders As They Are Not Fail Safe.

D610 DST Short Status Test Fail

It appears your hard disk has died and it may not be possible for you to retrieve your data.
Remove your hard drive from the laptop and insert it into an USB harddrive adapter, (they are not expensive and you can use it later as a external hard drive). Then plug it into the USB port of a working computer. The computer should/may see it as an external drive, if you are lucky you will be able to copy your data, if not, you are out of luck.
There are companies that can recover data from faulty hard drives, but it will cost you an arm and a leg for their service.

I am getting an error code HD521-2W that won't allow me to reload

Portil,

That error message means is your hard drive is failing or has completely failed.

I doubt you will be able to boot to it, but you can try pressing function key F8 just before Windows starts trying to load and select Safe mode or you can also try from the same menu, Last Known Good.

If you can not get that far and you have valuable data you need to recover, save the old drive and install (or have installed) a replacement drive and install the O/S on the new drive. Once that is working, add the old drive back in as a slave and with a little luck, you may be able to back up some of your data.

If your data is extremely valuable (meaning you are willing to pay to get it back) there are services available that will retrieve all the data from your drive.

Let me know if you need more help or advice.
