If the monitor has more than 1 source then make sure it is in the correct one. make sure the cable is fully inserted in the monitor and Pc. try another monitor to rule out a graphics card fault on the PC

Plug it in to the mains plug, plug in your inputs and then power it up. If it says no signal or something similar, try scanning through every single input on the menu until something comes onto the screen.

I see that this monitor has a DVI input, in additon to the VGA input. I suggest getting a suitable cable to use the DVI input, to see if the fault replicates. If it doesn't, you have identified the problem - an issue with the analogue signal processeing circuitry in either the monitor or the computer. The monitor's auto sleep analogue circuitry, for example, may not be sensing a signal, and going to sleep. BTW, if you use a DVI-DVI cable, you avoid the video signal ever going through an analogue stage, and the image will also be purer.

I was given a Soyo monitor, model; DYLM1988, that starts but only stays on for a few seconds. What are some possible problems and what could I try to fix it?

This is typical with many sets when it goes old as there is a high possibility that the components over a period of heating and cooling , tend to bring on a problem of dry soldering. So my advice is to check the set for some loose joints that have played on to give you these erratic shut downs.

Remove main plug, the covers - with caution of high voltage, check for dry joints, use a good soldering iron to solder all suspected points. Please find below two links for tips on poor start ups, as if the set is totally failed the SMPS might be faulty

medproducts, Nothing new here. Check internal "switch-mode-power-supply board" only after devoting about 1-2 hours of viewing "lcd monitor disassembly" and "lcd monitor repair" video clips at YOUTUBE!!! Then you will need to make big decision!!! Let me and all who read this know what your plan of action is.

If it uses AC adapter, then check the DC voltage at the DC plug to see if you get any voltage, if it use Direct power cord then it may have blown fuse inside the monitor, then you will need to open up the monitor.
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

Monitor goes blank coming out of power save mode

I found this on the Internet...

"Press the "Input" button on your LCD monitor's front panel repeatedly at three- or four-second intervals until your monitor wakes up. If your monitor is set to an incorrect input mode, it won't receive a video signal. After you reset the monitor to the proper input mode, it will receive the signal and wake up automatically."
