Question about Ryobi Garden

1 Answer

I have a Ryobi Expand-It tiller attachment (electric). I have used it for 7 years without problems but yesterday, in rocky soil (which has been the case most times that I've used it), the drive mechanism disengaged so that the motor raced without the tines turning. I took it apart and, without a manual, reassembled it to make sure the shaft was connected to the coil that turned the drive gear. But it only lasted another minute before it disengaged again. Is this repairable or do I need to replace it?

I think Homelite Expand It and Ryobi use the same pruner attatchment. I found this one on a Homelite Parts site under Ryobi. Your part looks to be number 20 in the breakdown. I hope this helps.

you have to get someone with a big tractor to "break" the ground up first. A tiller is just that...Not a plow

Which small ''mini'' tiller to purchase

Definitely stay away from Ryobi, Troy Bilt, Bolens and Yard Machines by MTD. They are all Ryobi with different brand names on them. (goes for trimmers too) MTD owns them all. The best small tiller, IMHO, is Mantis. (2-cycle) I think Sears sells them now. I have one and it will run circles around the rest.

Tiller usage

Power tillers are used for breaking up the soil. They improve conditions for new plantings, develop gardens, weed, and reseed lawn patches. A power tiller takes the toil out of large or difficult projects. Below you will see the three main types of power tillers available. Choosing between them generally depends on the size of the area you wish to till and the type of soil in your area

Crt or srt tiller?

* CRT or SRT -- These are two terms you will see on rear-tine tillers only. o Counter Rotating Tines are best for heavier duty jobs and for breaking new ground. o Standard Rotating Tines are good for aerating the soil and help propel the tiller forward.
