Question about Raypak REFRACTORY KIT

2 Answers

Hello, my Raypak RP2100 is getting very hot within 20-25 minutes of operation which then leads to a problem with transformer (it burns out). What could be a problem? How come heater body is getting so hot? Thanks!

Check the thermostat setting. If its set too high the unit will get over hot.But if the thermostat setting is not kept on high still the unit gets hot, then this is faulty thermostat its getting overheated. Also check the switch and line voltage. Its making the transformer burnt out. thanks.

Quite often, there is a bypass valve allowing the pool water to bypass the heater incase it's being serviced, or a leak etc. You would close inlet and outlet valves to heater and open the bypass. This would isolate the heater. If you have the bypass open while heating, you will reduce (or eliminate) the flow through the heater. This will allow the water in the heater to heat very fast, and lets be glad there's a temp control or your plumbing would melt. These heaters should have full flow through the heater, and you'll see min temp rise per pass. That may be a reason for the bodyfor getting hotter.

Thank you very much for the response!
I do not have bypass, full flow goes through the heater. The whole outer jacket is getting very hot, last time when I waited a little bit longer it was almost impossible to touch service panel to remove it.
    Thanks for helping!

Manual suggests to replace "refractory panels". Do you know how to check "refractory panels"? Do you think it could be a problem?
What could be a problem with service board that could cause an overheat?

The manuels suggestion is correct i just looked upon it. In my words if you dont know much about it please get it replaced with the help of a repair guy.

The transformer would be the most likely cause. It is inside the chassis inside the junction box where the power comes into the heater. Check the secondary side for 24 VAC. It is likely not going to be there.

Heating but no hot water? i can feel the heat coming off the heater but not getting any hot water?? plz help. i have a raypak rp2100

You have a spring loaded valve inside the water manifold. Open the manifold and make sure that that valve is closing. Then or first make sure if you have a by-pass valve be sure that is almost closed.these will make sure that the water is going through the heater. Also remember you shouldn't be able to feel any hot water at the returns. That is part of what these valves do. They help keep anyone from getting scolded by too hot water. The water at the return should be no more than 7 to 10 degrees hotter than when it goes into the heater.

How do I know if my heater is set for 120 vs 240

I think the only thing powered its the transformer. You connect L1 to Black and white to W and leave the red empty. If it's 120V and you connect L1 to Black and L2 to Red if it's 240V and leave W empty. See attched link to manual, and schematic inside.

What terminals on the Intermatic timer (Load/Line A and Load/Line B sides) do I wire the black, white, and red wires to? Raypak RP2100 capron digital natural gas heater.

You won't use all three wires from the heater, only the two required for the line voltage present inside the timer. Is the timer fed 115 or 230 VAC? You will want the heater on the line side to avoid the heaters power being interupted all the time causing you to have to always reset it. Just be sure to select the corect leads from the transformer based on voltage present.

My raypak rp2100 electronic seems to light the pilot light but then it takes a while to light the gas and when it does it shoots flames out the top of the heater. I'm thinking its the gas valve or the...

It is probably something much more simple than that...Turn it on and stand back until it finally ignites, then look, using a mirror, at the burner tray from below. You will probably find a lot of the tubes, especially those near the pilot area, are not working or are burning bright orange. If that is the case, something, probably spiders, are blocking the gas from getting into the tubes. That will cause the big burst at ignition as the gas builds up for a bit before it finally reaches the pilot area.
