Netgear access point cant open configuration page

My Netgear access point is connected to my modem with a cable .. and i can access the internet but i cant open the configuration page 192.168.0.227 ... i cant ping it .. iv tried reseting to factory settings and adding a static ip but it wont work .. and the default gateway stays as the modems ip and not the wireless device's ip .. can anyone help???

    It worked one time with a wireless connection i don't know how, i didn't change anything but then it didn't work anymore, and what do you mean by configuration software?

    You can configure it with a wireless connection it worked once when i reset it and i have alot of friends who have netgear and can configure it via wireless .. and about the cd , it seems that i have lost it , is there anyway to run the software without it .. is it downloadable??

    Ok il try it .. but when i connect the wireless device to the laptop does the wireless device have to be connected to the modem? .. because when i do it there will be no internet and when i type ipconfig in cmd there is no default gateway.

Typically you should be using configuration software until a real IP can be setup and you either address it statically or turn on DHCP. As for the gateway and other information, on a wireless gateway, it should all be routed through the network. Also, I think you have to be wired to the WAP to access the config page, I don't believe it can be seen over the wireless connection as a security feature.

    While the Netgear router doesn't need it (It just uses 192.168.1.1), the Netgear wireless gateway should have had some configuration software on the CD that came with it that can see the WAP even when it has no assigned IP. There is an option to let you access the configuration via web and wireless that can be enabled at that point, but I don't think it does this by default if you reset it. To initially configure it, I think you will need to be attached via copper line regardless...even if that just means that both the WAP and you are in wall ports in the same building and running through a switch. It does not necessarily need to be cross over cable running directly between the devices.

    Just connect to the device with an Ethernet cable first. Attaching to a wireless device directly by cable is just common sense as part of the trouble-shooting process. I understand you want to eventually configure it wireless and that all your friends do it that way, but it not considered a secure method of management so may not be default, what your friends have done is kind of irrelevant to this problem anyway since we're trying to configure the thing, and it's obviously not working.

    You need to access the device somehow. Since you have no software there are several URL options that may work depending on the device. 192.168.1.1 is the default on all the routers, some netgear create a DNS entry for "www.routerlogin.net" you can use, or try whatever IP that DHCP set up for the device or the specific IP in use by the access point if you can find that out. Since your only running from the machine, you may even be able to confirm the address is active with PING.

    When you get into the configuration and get the IP you can feel free to trouble shoot the wireless further or enable whatever options need to be set to allow remote administration by wireless. But on an inaccessible device, you need to limit the points of failure.

NetGear Gateway Access Problem


No to warner's locking the modem. 192.168.0.1 is the correct address for accessing the options within the modem. incidentally the Motorola wireless modem works better. Go on line to Netgear technical service and they will guide you through the task of setting up the system.

A Netgear wireless router attaches multiple devices to your Internet connection, either by ethernet cable or wirelessly.
If you can't connect to the Internet, the problem can be anywhere along the chain of devices and technologies that connect your computer to the Internet.
Knowing how to troubleshoot your Netgear or other wireless router is an essential part of determining where the problem is and fixing it.

Click your "Start" button, and choose "Run."
Type "cmd" in the text box (without quotation marks), and click "OK."
A command prompt will open. Type the following: ipconfig /all. Press your "Enter" key.
A list of numbers and other networking configuration information will display.
Find your network adapter in this list of headers.
If you use your computer wirelessly in many different places, you may have to scroll through a lot of different options to find your adapter.
If you connect to the Internet using a cable, look for a header that begins with "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection."
If you connect wirelessly, look for a header that begins with "Ethernet adapter Wireless Connection."
You will usually only see an IP address displayed under one header in either category.

Record your IP address and default gateway on a piece of paper or in a text file.

Tips & Warnings
You can use the "ipconfig /all" command on almost any computer that connects to a network or the Internet. If "cmd" doesn't open a command prompt, you can use any method your operating system allows to open the prompt or shell. If your Netgear wireless router is not sending a wireless signal even after you've powered it off, waited 20 seconds and powered it back on, you can use an ethernet cable to attach a computer directly to the router to continue troubleshooting.

My internet Connects perfectly to the computer to the modem.. but when I put my router inbetween the two, it stops working and i've tried everything including restore factory settings, and it still...


Well in order to access internet via your router, it needs to be configured as you said its being restored to factory defaults. Also always mention your ISP (Internet service provider), Router model no and Computer type with running Operating system for exact steps to fix such problems
Alright, first of all we need to establish physical connection with the Modem -> Router->Computer, then we will setup router
  1. Connect Ethernet cable from Modem to the WAN port of the router.
  2. Connect another Ethernet cable from Router LAN port to computer LAN port.
  3. Power cycle all the devices (Turn on Modem first, then Router and at last computer).
  4. Usually in case of Cable ISP, router would automatically get connection from Modem and Internet should start working.
  5. Else you can open Router admin page to configure
  6. You need to find the IP address of your router (usually Default IP of Netgear routers is 192.168.1.1). I can't tell what is the IP for your router as you didn't mentioned Model no.
  7. Open Command prompt (Start-Run-CMD) and type IPCONFIG.
  8. Default gateway address is the IP address of your router. (You can also find router's default IP on the its panel below.)
  9. Now next step is to access router interface.
  10. Open Browser and type http://192.168.1.1 (It is just an example, you need to use the IP address of your router, we are assuming its 192.168.1.1). Press Enter
  11. Type "admin" in usename and "password" in password box to login (both are in lower case without quotes)
  12. In the left side you can find Setup Wizard, Click on Yes and then Next
  13. Wait for the process to complete and then hit "Apply".

If the cables supplied have RJ45 connectors then they are used for connecting and configuring the wireless settings in Netgear router and to connect the Netgear to the DSL modem foe Internet access.
Most likely the color of the cables is not important.
To configure the wireless settings, connect a cable from one of the LAN ports (not the WAN/Internet port) to the LAN port on your computer. You may remove this cable after configuring the wireless settings if you want to connect to the Netgear by wireless only. You need to connect other computers to the Netgear's LAN port with a cable if they do not have wireless cards installed in these computers.

The other LAN cable is used to connect the Netgear WAN/Internet port to the DSL modem so you computers can connect to the Internet via the Netgear router.

If you connect the computer directly to the modem, does it work?
If that works then the modem is working.
Now connect the computer to the router and the modem to the router.
You will need to open the set up page of the router to check the settings of the router.
You can set up the router without the CD also.

Wireless router says its working laptop says no its not


Your sister was accessing the wireless access point at school which is connected to the Internet/WEB access via a router and the school's broadband service provider.
For you to access the Internet using your wireless adapter on your laptop, you need your own wireless access point and connect it to a broadband ADSL or cable modem and then connect it to an Internet Service Provider. Some Internet Service Providers (cable and ADSL) can supply a combined modem/router/wireless Access point.
If you already have a broadband modem all you need is a wireless access point/router. You only need to configure the wireless access point and your wireless adapter so they will communicate with each other. Folow the instructions in the manuals.

Problem with netgear super g router


Here's sort of a checklist of things to consider:

1. First of all, connect the computer directly to the cable modem. Make certain that your ISP (Comcast) is providing internet service. Modems (DSL, cable) typically have a web page (HTML document output format) interface through which you can connect with your favorite HTTP client (that is, browser), such as MS Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. You can always connect to that if your computer has been given an IP address: you would look for the device you are connected to (modem, router) as the "gateway IP address" (for modems, it might be a 10.0.0.x IP number or something like that; for routers, it might be a private LAN address of 192.168.x.x or 172.16.x.x or something like that). Type in the gateway IP address: if it unsecured, you will see the interface immediately with gettable (status) and settable (configurable) form controls; if it requires authentication, you must enter a username/password combination to gain access to the interface. The default username/passwords are provided in the user guides of the device from the manufacturer.

2. Once you are sure the modem is providing service and that you have configured it properly, then remove the connection to the computer and connect the router. Check that all the lights of the router illuminate properly after startup.

3. Now connect BY ETHERNET (Cat 5 unshieled twisted pair) cable your computer to the one of the slots to the router. We'll go wireless later. Make sure that you are now getting internet service through the router while connected to it with the Ethernet cable. Make sure that you are talking to the router through its web interface. Again, look at your internet settings (find the gateway IP address), and enter that IP address into your browser. You will be challenged for authentication: use the router's default authentication (usually the user name is "admin" and the password is also "admin" or maybe a number sequence like "123456", I don't have your super G model number) and then enter the Interface. Perhaps you need to make special settings for the type of broadband: VCI and VCP values and protocol for the WAN side. You might need to learn these from Comcast's support (by phone or by web site).

Alternatively, rather than us the browser interface to your router, Netgear may provide a CD install disk which contains an application you run to directly manage your router device. It will configure it and also set it up for wireless (see next step).

When you see web pages (such as Google, Yahoo, even Comcast's) through your router, then you are ready to configure the wireless part.

4. While still connected to the router's web page interface in admin user mode, look for the wireless part. You need to set an SSID (don't use the default...create a name you can recognize). This SSID is broadcast to the wireless and you will identify it when opening your computer's wireless adapter. Set an authentication mode as well, so that only you and other can connect to your wireless and no one else (prevents unsecured connections, and turning your wireless into an open "hotspot"). Use WPA or WPA2 (not WEP) if you have it, and you will be given or asked to create a key which is probably a series of numbers and the letters A through F (a long hexadecimal number). Write down the authenticatin type (WPA or WPA2 with AES or TKIP and the key value) and then write this information in for the wireless setup of all computers wishing to connect to the router. You can create this also if Netgear provides an interface (by an CD install disk) for your computer: it may tell you to insert a USB drive to copy information that you would then use to configure all computers that will use the wireless, since it will setup a network configuration that includes the authentication key.

For specific information about how to configure the wireless adapter for router connection, you would need to give the OS you are using (WinXP? Win Vista? MacOS? Linux?)


In future posts, or messages to me, please as a rule provide as much information as possible about ALL devices, namely make AND model/product numbers, since often the experts can check online to see how you can interface with these and configure them.
