Acer 5650 Nvidia 7600 grapgics card. On DOS screens some characters are changed eg format becomes dormat. Initial splash screen has broken red lines down it. Restored from dvd but will not pick up graphics driver. When added manually goes black. Fear Nvidia chip fault. Laptop 18 months old

This sounds like a driver issue for the video card. I would look for an update by visiting the Acer site or by looking at the video card type in the device manager and look for an update from the manufacturer of the card (intel, nvidia, etc).

Hi

It seems that you need to use the latest driver for the graphic card.

You can do that through visiting the manufacture's website, choose your laptop model, OS, look for video (vga) driver, and download it.
Please tell us your results

Graphics card issues

if you have a wide screen laptop the picture format is 16x9 in stead of 4x3 as the old models.

you can try to change the screen resolution to something like 800x600 1024x768 this are standar 4.3 formats. after you can run the video application and see if it shows you a full screen picture. if you need more info contact me

Motherboard or on-board graphics card failure

I had the same kind of stripes on my hp dv9000. I read in forum that it was a heat problem, that loosens the soldering on the GPU chip.. I wrapped it into a towel for approx 30-60 min.. That removed the stripes in bios screen..

Garbled display with Geforce 7600GS

From experince I would still say this is a heat issue, I just went though this with my HD4870 ATI card. I was using an after market cooler wich was insuficent for cooling. All the symptoms point to a heat issue. Also since the card is 2 years old, its a good chance the VRM's have fried and any heat causes the card to basicaly shutdown in a manner of speaking. you could try getting the Accelero S1 cooler that would replace the fan on the card, then attach 2X120mm fans. Only problem is you can buy a newer better card. for example the 8600 GT is about 80-90$

Screen flashes as desktop initilizes very slow

the hp dv8380us has an issue with the nvidia 7600 go graphics chip when the manufactured this laptop they didn't use the proper heat sink and heat sink compound so it causes the graphics chip to over heat. and when it over heats it causes errors as you explained. i also have a hp dv8380us  and have the same issues and haven't found a fix. mine also shows the picture 4 times as big as the lcd so i can only see 1 fourth of the picture i can see it fine if i hook it up through the vga port though. hope this explains your problem.
