Regardless, I'm thinking you need the software that came with it. You can get it here:
If you're also saying the scan button on the printer itself doesn't engage the scanning to begin, check the manual (if you don't have it, you can download that as well from the Canon site) to see how to reset the machine to it's defaults.

You can scan multiple pages of a document on the document table and save them as one PDF file on your computer. Epson Scan displays an editing page so you can view the pages as you scan them and reorder, rotate, or delete them as necessary.
Select PDF as the file type setting.
When prompted "scanning complete. Do you want to continue" Click "add page"
