One of Windows annoying so called “feature” is CHKDSK being automatically being run whenever you don’t shut down your computer properly. You get the blue colored screen that says “Checking file system on C: The type of the file system is NTFS. One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue. To skip disk checking, press any key within 10 seconds(s).
Simply pressing any key would stop CHKDSK from running but when you restart your computer, you’ll get this prompt again. Sometimes even after letting CHKDSK scan the drive that it wants to, CHKDSK would still automatically run at next boot! Here’s how to disable or stop CHKDSK at Windows bootup
There are some people suggested to edit the registry but the proper way to disable CHKDSK from starting up is using the /x switch on chkntfs command in command prompt. The /x switch will exclude a drive from the default boot-time check. If you have drive C: as your hard drive, then the command to disable chkdsk from scanning C: drive would be:
chkntfs /x c:
If you have 2 drive, C and D, you can disable chkdsk with the command below
chkntfs /x c: d:

I am running on limited diagnostic ability with no recovery disc. when iran chkdsk /f /r from c prompt it has stayed atuck at12% complete for laat 14 hours

I have run chkdsk /f (which is check disk fix) and I have run chkdsk /r (check disk repair) but I have never heard of trying both switches at the same time. I suggest powering off the machine (hold down power button) than restarting and running chkdsk /f first and if you still have issues run chkdsk /r which is a more in depth scan which can take a couple of hours depending on the size of the drive but never 15 hours in my experience.

EMachines Recovery Discs

Hi Sandysue, As I understand your problem, 1. The error could be caused by: memory, video, hardrive or drivers; 2. Windows by asking you to run CHKDSK /F has detected a possible problem with your harddrive; 3. It is possible that the reason you cannot go to DOS mode is because your harddrive is formatted in NTFS and not FAT332. There are a couple of ways on how to go about this but all would require that you have access to second PC: 1. Run a third party software (BartPE) that you will have to boot from your CD Drive or USB and run a disk checking utility; 2. Remove your hardrive and install it as a secondary master in the 2nd PC and run chkdsk or scandisk; 3. Remove your hardrive and install it in an external HD enclosure and connect using USB to the 2nd PC and run chkdsk or scandisk; 4. Remove your hardrive and install it either USB or as secondary master to the 2nd PC. Copy all your important files to the 2nd PC, and repartition/reformat. Reinstall to the eMachine and reinstall Windows. There is a possibility that even if you were able to run CHKDSK or Scandisk eventually your best bet would still be #4. If you have gained access to the inside of your eMachine PC, it would also be a good idea to remove/reinsert any cards and the memory stick(s). A little housekeeping would also be nice. I hope that this be of some help and pls post again how things turn up or if you need further information. Goodluck and kind regards.

My samsung Q45 notebook tells me to insert the windows installation disc and restart my computer. I have not got this, can anyone help?

First disconnect any external devices connected to the computer except the mouse and keyboard.

This error usually happens if the hard drive is not getting detected by the operating system or due to bad hard drive.

First check if all the physical connections to the computer are set correctly.
If it is a laptop remove the laptop battery, wait for 5 minutes and then connect back the battery, check if it works.

If the above step does not work then you will need to run CHKDSK tool to check if there are any bad sectors on the hard drive would suggest running chkdsk which would scan for any bad sectors on the hard drive and if those errors are repairable if would repair and if it cannot at the end of the chkdsk scan you would see a message "found one or more unrecoverable error on the hard drive" which means the hard drive is damaged.

If you have a Windows Vista installation disc, you need to restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc. If you do not restart your computer from the disc, the option to repair your computer will not appear.

1. Insert the installation disc.
2. Restart your computer.
Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.
3. If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.
Note: If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check the information that came with your computer. You may need to change your computer's BIOS settings. For more information, see BIOS: frequently asked questions.
4. Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
5. Click Repair your computer.
6. Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
7. On the System Recovery Options menu, click command prompt and in the command prompt typechkdsk /f and wait till the scan is completed and later restart the computer and check what happens.

Important: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.

Hope this helps!

Media center m370n keeps rebooting in loop wont start says KERNEL32.DLL was not found

Sounds like you have a boot error on the hard drive. Time to get out your rescue discs and reload Windows. When reloaded run CHKDSK/F to clear any errors. If you can run CHKDSK/F before having to format your hard drive, that may save you a lot of time.

How do i check disc on compaq computer

To check disc while still in windows, click on computer, right click on the "C" drive, Scroll down to properties, click on the "Tools" tab, click on the check disc button, make sure to check the box to automatically fix errors. Since the disc is in use, the program may ask you to force a dismount of the drive, hit ok and continue the scan. It may also ask you to schedule a disc scan when the system reboots, choose yes and reboot. The system will scan the disc and repair any issues.

I always have the i/o error with my maxtor 500gb hdd and i dont know how to solve it , i dont want to formate it cause there very important files that i need , can you help plzzz

Scan the disc.

Press start -> run -> type in: Cmd
type CHKDSK /F /X /R X:

Replace X: with the right drive letter, find out what letter your drive has by looking in my computer.

for example if your drive letter for this drive is G: then this is what you would write.

CHKDSK /F /X /R G:

the scan / repair will take a while

Gmini 402 camcorder freeze/format

If you have problems with the file system on your Gmini you can try to fix it using the DOS utility, check disk (chkdsk). Do the following; ? Make sure external AC adapter is powering the Gmini. ? Quit all running applications. ? Properly connect the Gmini to your computer ? Wait patiently (up to 5 minutes) for Windows XP to show the local drive as mounted. ? Open a DOS window. Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. ? At the prompt, type chkdsk e: /f. Use e: or f: or whatever drive letter is representing your Gmini. The /f argument tells the program to automatically fix errors. ? Be patient, this may take a while. ? When it is finished, exit the DOS Window and properly disconnect the Gmini from your computer. Try using the device now and see if makes any difference. This method should help to fix any disc errors that have occurred within the FAT and help your PC recognise it again. If you have more problems, try formatting it using a DOS prompt. You MUST make sure NOTHING is trying to access the disc before you can format it - this includes windows explorer.
