Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

5 Answers

I have a 60GB PS3, it's not played for more than 3 hours at any time and maybe once or twice a week. Last night I turned it on as usual to play a game and 10 minutes later it turned off and instead of the light staying red when it's usually turned off, it flashes... I'm not a massive technician when it comes to these things so I need a very specific answer so I know what I need to do, because I got it for $450NZ!!!! That's a lot of money and I'm hoping it's a simple fix.

Dear, this is not a very common problem but unfortunately it happens sometimes when an internal overheat occur.
The PS3 red light issue and the PS3 yellow light of death are two names for the same problem of red blinking light. This occurs in case of a heavy workload on the console at a time. Like, this might happen when you are playing graphic intensive games. Sometimes a damaged hard-drive can also lead to this problem. When this problem occurs, your PS3 will beep three times and then the red LED will start blinking. Next time you turn on the PS3, first the green LED will switch 'on', which will turn yellow for a second, and then the red light starts flashing.

How to Fix PS3 Blinking Red Light

Do It Yourself
Follow these steps that will help you fix the PS3 flashing red light problem yourself.

  • Restart your console.
  • A loose cable can be a cause, so check all the cables. You can un-plug all of them, except the power cord and re-insert. If the PS3 blinking red light is still a problem, move on to the next step.
  • Put off the console, remove and re-insert the hard-drive. This step usually helps fix the blinking red light on PS3.
Troubleshooting Guide
If the steps given above don't help, you can check out the PlayStation3 repair guide. Yes, the PS3 repair guide is a cheaper solution for fixing PS3 blinking red light. This guide is not only helpful in troubleshooting your PS3 blinking red light problem but many other problems that your PS3 might face. It gives you a step by step procedure to troubleshoot PS3 problems. What's more that the instructions are accompanied with detailed photographs and labels which help you understand the procedure better. This is sure to help you fix your console in a couple of hours. If you don’t have a PS3 repair guide, you can consider buying it or move on to the next option.

Take it To Sony
If the above two solutions don't work you would need to take your console to a Sony service center. They will charge you the fixing charges, which are about USD 140, no matter what the problem with PS3 is, minor or major. After that, depending upon the problem, you will have to pay the rest of the charges. It will take about 4-6 weeks to get your console repaired. Check if you have any warranty or it has expired before you start the procedure of sending your console to Sony.

So you can try fixing the PS3 blinking red light problem yourself. In case you can't, it's best to send your console to a Sony service center and get it repaired. Sometimes the problem might be minor or in some cases you might also need to change the hard-drive which would mean extra expenses.

The system probably overheated... you should stand up the ps3 and not let it lay down cause it covers some of the air vents... If you already have your ps3 standing up you might need to buy a cooling system for your ps3... You know an extra fan that you hook up to the side of the system... If this fails to work you might have an internal problem and might need to contact sony, or take the system into a bestbuy with geek squad... they will be able to identify the problem for a minimal fee...
Best of luck.

SOURCE: My PlayStation 3 turned off

Unfortunately what you are describing is known as the Yellow Light of Death (YLOD). This indicates a general hardware failure normally due to overheating. When these PS3's were produced Sony decided to use lead free solder. The problem with lead free solder is that it is not as flexible as leaded solder but it is cheaper and more environmentally friendly. When the console gets hot and cools down hairline cracks appear within these solder joints and a good electrical contact cannot be made. This then causes the console to fail. It could be on a number of different components including the CPU, GPU or memory. There is a temporary cure that may or may not work but ultimately the console will need to be repaired professionally or replaced. If it is out of warranty Sony will not replace it but will offer a refurbished unit for around £130. If you look on Youtube for Yellow light of death fix there is a way that you can re-heat the solder joints using a heat gun but if you are not confident taking apart electrical items then this really may not be something you want to try.

I am sorry I cant give you any better news but unfortunately it is a very common problem with the PS3

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

Hi this is a very common problem and its to do with the ps3 over heating,
try the following.
leave it off and unplugged for an hour
check all air vents are free from fluff and dust and vac if needed.
make sure the ps3 is not being used whilst its on carpet
make sure the ps3 is not sitting on top of another electrical item such as dvd or sky box as this will cause it to over heat a lot quicker.
make sure its not wedged in a confined space it needs to have plenty of room around it to ensure cool air flow.

unplug all the leads from the back of the ps3 and the telly then plug them all back in, doing this removes any static that may have built up, then switch it on.

if after doing the above it still dont work then this indicates that either the gpu or cpu chip has over heated, if you have any warranty left take it back you need to check on the ps3 web site to see how old your ps3 is as this fault is covered by ps3 warranty for a couple of years but you need to check this.

now as for getting it repaired, well its a bit hit and miss i repair them myself and if it was an xbox 360 then i would say the chance of it working again is pretty high but as its a ps3 then these can be a bit hit and miss if the ps3 has over heated a lot and fried the cpu or gpu chip or both then the cost of repair would not be worth doing as it would be cheaper to buy a second hand ps3 or even a reconditioned one.

its not the kind of repair you can do yourself as you need to know how to test the circuit board to find out if the chips have been damaged.
the only other option you have is selling it for spares, i buy the damaged ones for spare parts but you wont get much for it as it is, i mean you could pay for the repair and you may get charged even though it cant be fixed,

i always say to my customers that if i cant repair it i will only charge for the parts i used which is nothing but if i do fix it then i charge them the cost of the repair, usually if its beyond repair they let me buy it off them as i pay more than they would get from ebay as they sell on their for about 30 quid with the problem you have got.

let me know if you need further assistance ok

plz rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

use google and search for the following.
how to fix ylod on ps3
or
ylod repair guide for ps3
or
how to fix ylod on ps3 using heat gun

search for any of the above, never pay for any guides their all free and i can always talk you through the process of doing this repair

if you have any warranty take it back as you get at least 12 month warranty

never use the guides that tell you to either use hair dryer or to put the circuit board inside an oven both these methods dont work and the oven method will destroy your ps3,
if your doing this yourself you will need a heatgun with temp settings ie 1 and 2 high heat and low heat about 350f is what you need,
make sure you get a repair guide

i repair these for £40 so if your unsure what your doing or dont want to risk making it worse then shop around for repair service and they will sort it for you i always give 30 day warranty

if you are planning on doing this yourself let me know and ill send you some link for sites that have lots of guides you can follow ok

Hi I have one of the original ps3 60gb Has always worked fine until last night when I was playing it suddenly made the "beep " noise it nomally does when switching off the red light just flashes...

Hi there, this is usually a sign of the Yellow Light Of Death (YLOD). When the PS3 was originally made Sony used lead free solder in their consoles. Lead free solder is not as flexible as normal leaded solder and over time due to expansion and contraction because of heat given off by the console's components lots of PS3's failed. You have got a couple of options, you can either have the console professionally repaired which is going to cost around £50. As the console is out of warranty Sony will only replace it for a cost of around £130. As a last resort if you are good with electrical items you might want to have a go at repairing it yourself. If you google YLOD you will find plenty of guides that will instruct you on how you can repair it yourself.

Please bear in mind that once a console has the YLOD there is NO guarantee as to how long a repair will last, it could be a couple of hours to a couple of years.

I hope this information helps you and I hope you get your PS3 up and running soon.

My ps3 won't let me play ps2 games. is there anything that can be done?

Unfortunately, no. Sony built the PS3 to only play PS3 games, so no backwards compatibility. Maybe in the future though, they might release an update.

PS3 WON'T PLAY BLU-RAY DISCS

The problem is all in the settings. You probably have a 1080i television that cannot display in 1080p. To fix this go to the main menu and go to:

Settings:

Video Settings

Then Blu Ray Disc and make it turn the Display BD in 1080p 24hz or whatever. Once you do that, start the Blu Ray Disc again, and you should be able to watch it. This all happened because your tv doesn't display 1080p.

Hope this helps!
