Question about Dell Inspiron 6400 Notebook

1 Answer

Cant get any drivers to work on my dell after i reformatted the drive and re installed windows xp. I have a dell inspiron E1505 and the only driver I could get to work from dells website is the nVidia driver. I need a driver for my wireless internet card and my sound card in order to get back to normal. Any help?

I attempted to use all of the audio drivers available on the dell website and none of those worked. Is there a way to access my hardware via looking at it from a software standpoint. I have had my laptop for 5 years now and just wiped it clean to start new.

There are several different drivers listed for each category under your laptop model and Windows XP:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INSPIRONI6400/E1505&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

You will not be able to install all of these drivers. You need to pinpoint which items your laptop came with. To do so, you may be able to look at your manual or order history and determine what exactly went into your computer.

You will want to go to Device Manager to view your hardware from Windows. The easiest way to get there is to right click my computer, and click Properties. You can access it via the Hardware tab.

Normally, under "Sound, video and game controllers" you should see your audio device listed without any icons in the lower left, for example an exclamation or red X. Your audio device most likely has a yellow exclamation next to it, but may or may not be under the sound category. When you locate your audio device (if you are unsure, you can list all of the items matching this criteria), right click the item, and Properties. Go to the Details tab, and under the dropdown, select Hardware Ids. If you provide the information here, I can do my best to locate the exact audio device and driver for you.

Finally, what would be of additional help would be a service tag number from Dell, that way I can look up your exact configuration.
