Question about Breville BES820 Espresso Machine

Hello, When steaming milk, steam blasts out of the espresso filter (or if the filter holder is off, it blasts out of the head where the filter holder goes, anyway). I don't know if this is a problem or normal? Water also drips out of the same head long after the espresso shot has been made.

    We had the same problem with our Breville BES820 purchased in August 2010. It was steaming from the brew head and leaking from the hot water wand when we were steaming the milk. The machine was replaced by Breville under warranty when we notified them what was happening. We have only had the new one a few days so will wait and see if the fault develops on this one.

THE FROTHER SPOUT KEEPS BLOWING OFF DURING THE FROTHING


I'm guessing this is a table top machine. If so then I take your meaning of "Blowing Off" as in turning off or running out of steam. The table top steamers usually found on home units do not have the capacity to froth large mugs like a "Venti" 20 oz cups. You will have to wait for the boiler to re-heat. It's best to heat a smaller cup of cold milk, pour the milk into the venti and make a 2nd batch again with cold milk. (It's hard to re-froth hot milk).
* check your steam wand tip if it's plugged with old milk. Soaking the wand in warm water overnite will help soften the milk which can be blow out when you make steam again. If you make a lot of milk drinks, it's a good idea to give the wand a blast of steam, then a good wipe with a damp cloth to keep milk residue off the wand.
* It's also possible your steam heater is starting to clog up. If you find that it gets slower and less steam with time then the steamer will need to be replaced. Check your warranty and call for service.

Your machine company went out of business.

HOWEVER, see that round dial on the right ? that is what controls the "strength" of the steam coming out, so you can turn it on full blast, or just in little puffs of steam, by controlling turning the dial.
you have to make sure you have water in the machine too LOL.
now here are some tips:
use a metal container (it keeps the COLD milk cold)
use only WHOLE milk (there is more butter fat in it, and thus you'll get more of a whipped thick quality of whipped milk)
be very careful if it's your first time. if you're afraid, just go to a coffee shop by you, or even a star bucks, and watch them do it.

Delonghi perfecta milk not hot enough


Ummn - something in your Q. seems not right. The milk is not heated directly - its only heated by the steam as it passes by (and picks up) by the milk using a venturi effect - same as a spray bottle attached to a garden hose. You say you have froth - but you can only get that if you have steam... (it does not just blow air thru to create bubbles). So froth = steam & steam = heat... so milk must be hot.
Suggest you check manual for the 'heat' settings for your expresso as this may have been changed. While this is adjustable, the milk is not.

Also always heat your cups before using them - the silver cup 'holder' at the top does a reasonable job but boiling water does far better.

Takes a long time to steam milk. water comes out of the brewing head while steaming milk


i'll preface this by saying i have never used a strarbux machine, but I have used dozens of others (daily habit for 18 years now)

when are you trying to get your steam (ie before or after brewing the espresso)
If you have been trying before, wait till after (if your machine does not let you turn off the espresso output then when the coffee starts to slow down (just past the peak of flow).
It should take only a few seconds to steam the milk. (also the closer to the surface of the milk that the steam is released the frothier the milk will get)

take out screen and screen holder,and unscrew piece in head,clean with wire and try,i think its your head plugged out.

Leaking water from steamer


For the grouphead check the basket there might be a slight bump around the edge that is preventing it from making a good seal when it contacts the gasket in the head. If the Double works fine then the gasket is not the problem.
For the steam wand try flushing wand for 3 seconds just before steaming, if that does not help with the watery milk, then the boiler is not getting hot enough to produce steam.

New Rancilio Silva - steamed milk not perfect


please relay on your experience realizing that you now have new steam pipe(with different holes in the end of it and different pressure)
you will need to get use to them and get maximum quality of that steam pipe.
my advice:
  1. every time hold your hand in the bottom of milk container, so that you will prevent overheating which often gives the result you mentioned.
  2. every time you use cold milk.

I think I've figured my yard sale EX 80 out. First, the way I think it works... in the tightly sealed boiler the water is heated to boiling, it must have a pressure release valve that sends the water/steam through the coffee and into the carafe. So dangerously hot and under pressure. Before opening the big round cap at the top (reservoir) relieve pressure at the steam tube valve (right side)

Here's how I made my first batch:

When opening reservoir always turn unit off, let reservoir cool a little between batches or you may get a cloud of steam in your face when pouring in water, might not be good for the heating element to shock it with sudden drastic temperature changes either.

Cleaned by running a couple of jugs of water through, cold water (4 on the supplied jug) into the reservoir all parts installed. I read somewhere online (not specific to any machine) not lukewarm water, if it's online it must be true... right?

Put coffee into filter basket/basket holder, matching amount of water in reservoir, 2 or 4 (markings on filter and jug). Espresso coffee should be very finely ground

Install all covers and the coffee basket/filter basket, close steam tube valve, install carafe and turn on the machine. Should get blast of espresso after a couple of minutes.

The steam tube (operated by the valve) seems a little cheesy on first try but I'll get better with practice. There's no steam to the tube until the reservoir starts to send steam to the coffee, the coffee kinda restricts the steam enough to send it to the tube. I was thrown a little because I didn't get steam when I was cleaning the thing, but I think that was because there was no coffee to block the flow. So I opened the valve at the start of the brew, steamed the milk, closed the valve and then the steam blasts through the coffee, tasted good.

Great $1 find.
