Sounds this fridge/freezer has a refrigerant leak. Eventually the freezer will also stop freezing. Need to find and fix leak and refill with refrigerant.

Top stopped cooling, but freezer on bottom works fine. had some problem maintaining temp for last couple of weeks. do you think it is a fan or something more serious?

Freezer is not maintaining cold temp. is there a timer for the defrost?

Yes, it must have a timer somewhere. Many manufacturer's locate the timer at the bottom behind the grille, Maytag may be different, putting it behind a cover inside the fresh food compartment.
