I can't dump pictures from my Nikon D40 onto my computer through a USB port.Every other device works through this usb port but my nikon d40. This is also a sudden thing. I've been able to dump pictures this way for 3 years, then suddenly nothing... it won't work.It just says that the device has malfunctioned and it's not recognized.

more info: i am using win 7, everything in the os is up to date, when i try to install the driver to the camera (though it calls it an unknown device) it says it's up to date already. when i troubleshoot it gives me code 43 which tells me on the microsoft webstite that "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) ....Recommended resolution

One of the drivers controlling the device notified the operating system that the device failed in some manner.

If you have already run the Troubleshooting Wizard, you might want to check the hardware documentation for more information about diagnosing the problem."

i'm just not sure what the manual could tell me about "device failed in some manner"...

the camera works perfectly in every other way, but it's not recognized in windows as anything but a device that's malfunctioned.

It might have just happend due to recent update of your system

so the solution would also be another update

but before that go to the device manager , locate other devices and right click on it and click on update drivers, restart the system, if that works its fine else go on to the following link and download the latest version of the Nikon Software

Pictures show up on memory card in camera, but computer won't recognize the card - either inserted directly or by USB

ALTERNATE WAY TO TRANSFER PHOTOS TO COMPUTER
If your photos are stored on the memory card, then remove the memory card from the camera and insert it into an USB memory card reader. Connect this USB memory card reader and memory card into the USB port of your working computer. Your computer will see this as an USB Mass Storage Device or an external storage device; you can then open the folder on the memory card and copy the photos to your computer. Memory card reader is a handy device and is inexpensive. You can copy photos from other cameras and you can also download photos off your memory card to someone else's computer without the need of installing any programs.

I get a problem with the USB device when I attempt to download photos from my D40 to my computer. How do I solve this?

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use Nikon Transfer or any other photo cataloging program.

try going to my computer, then selecting under "devices with removable storage" the one that says coolpix, camara, something along those lines. mine says "nikon D40". double click on that (if it's there) and that should be it. mine doesnt autoplay either.

Computer cant find USB drivers for Nikon d40

I had the same problem with my D40x - I changed my USB cable to a much more robust one and all my problems went away.
You shouldn't need a driver, most OS's will recognise it as an imaging device.

Nikon D40 help?!

I assume the lens had the impact. The 18-55 lens has the built-in motors for auto-focus.
Try switching to manual focus (on the lens). If this works, the lens may not auto-focus anymore.
Try it and let me know.
cheers,
