I have a Western Digital USB Hard Drive(My Passport Essential 250 gb) which I cannot access, since I totally forgot the password to login. I contacted WD support service and they say there's nothing to be done, except to format the entire HD. Support????

Can I try some other solution, if there is any avalilable?

  • Jorge Valladares Aug 05, 2010

How about taking out the drive from its enclosure and attach it directly to a mainboard as primary or secondary device...I read that in some FAQ's

  • Jorge Valladares Aug 06, 2010

Since I can't log onto the WD USB Hard Drive, because I forgot the password. What do you think about formatting the drive and then apply a HD data recovering software

I'm afraid what they told you is pretty much the truth. I don't know if Western Digital tried to help you to remember your password or not, most people use something familiar to them. A pets name, relative, birthdays or something from an area of interest. I myself make up acronyms from silly saying I make up to help me remember the passwords. This has the advantage of being easy to remember and very hard to figure out.
There are some password hacking programs that you can find on the web but most of them are not worth what they ask for them. If there is critical information on the HDD that you can't afford to lose then this might be an option albeit not one I would be able to make a recommendation about. There is also the possibility that Western Digitals data recovery service might be able to recover your data for you but it will most likely destroy the HDD.

It might work to hook the drive up as an internal drive as you suggested. It will actually depend on if the password is locking or encrupting the drive or if it's just a access password for the driver software. For the amount of effort it will take it's definitely worth a try. Will you need help changing the drive over?

As for formating and then trying to recover your data. If you need to go with the data recovery route you do not want to try formatting the drive first, it will make data recovery harder if not totally impossible.

  • jonesspammai Aug 07, 2010

I'm sorry I missed that you thought the data recovery service by WD is software, it's a service they provide. They actually take the HDD apart and use special machines to try to access the data from the physical disk. It's rather costly and almost certainly will ruin your HDD. This is an option to try only if the data you have stored on the HDD is off significant value and irreplacable.

I am afraid that without the password they are correct.

There is a method that may and I repeat "MAY" work but there is mixed results and I cannot guarantee any success.

See Here

http://www.allhowtoos.com/data-recovery-wd-sync-cruzer-sync-dmailer-sync.php

There are many password kits available but I have not seen ANY for portable hard drives.

If I were you then what I would do is the following.

Take an image of the drive and store it elsewhere in the hope that one day you find such a piece of software.

Format the drive so that you can at least use it again.

For imaging software I would suggest either "clonezilla" which is FREE or norton ghost or acronis disk manager. The last two are paid software.

I am sorry to have to give you the same news as WD did but hopefully the link might work for you

I am sorry I did not see your comments due to bug in the system

However I have given you the best information available

You can remove the drive and install it to another computer no problem but you will still be left with the drive needing the profile and password information which is why I gave you the link to a possible work around.

Most experts do not recommend using the encryption on the WD drives for just this sort of reason.

It is propriety software and as such does not adhere to industry standards for encryption.

If I need to encrypt software or data to protect it I always ensure I have a work around to access the data again in case of such events.

This is known as a BACK DOOR and the WD one is the one I gave you.

Sorry but its all there is.

If you format the drive you will not be able to recover anyting at all.

I would stil try the method from the link first.

I am closing this account with FixYa so you may want to try another expert if you are not happy but I assure you I have provided you with the best information available.

    Before downloading there's a message:

HDD Unlock Wizard does not support external USB and FireWire enclosures. Please attach drives directly to the motherboard

Anyway, I will download and try

Okay, try and let me know the out come.

  • Jorge Valladares Aug 01, 2010

    From the FAQ:
Can I unlock a USB/FireWire hard drive? Can I use a USB adapter to unlock my hard drive?

HDD Unlock Wizard requires direct access to the hard drive; it is impossible to unlock a hard drive via USB or FireWire adapter or enclosure. You would have to remove the hard drive out of the enclosure and attach it to any working PC as a secondary drive.

I forgot to mention, that I want to recover the data, more than to simply be able of using the HD again. Western Digital offers the possibility of reformatting your USB HD after the 5th attempt and being able of using the drive again. But, for me is more important to gain access to my files in the HD. Therefore, it looks like hdd unlock is not the solution, after reading the FAQ's

I'd like to unlock a hard drive but I want to recover data

HDD Unlock Wizard erases the entire drive upon unlocking. If you need a solution which is safe to data, please consider using Repair Station instead.

  • Jorge Valladares Aug 04, 2010

I don't dare to risk my data, since it is also mentioned that, if you unlock the HD with hddunlock all data will be immediately formatted, which means lost. I don't care much for the drive, I do for the important data.

My wd pasport essential is not running when i attach it to my computer(hp dv6 pavillion). the light comes on but it will not open.

this drive is probably protected. you should try to unlock it first before you can access the drive.

when you plugin the drive you should have a temporary drive where unlock application resides.
run the application then type in your password.

if you don't have the password i guess there is no way to access the drive.

I'm so happy to tell u that ! u should just update ur wd device system system >>>

You can format your Western Digital drive .first you connect your drive with the computer. Now when the drive prompts you for the password then you enter any wrong password five times. Then you will be prompted to erase the existing drive. If it doesn't prompt to unlock the drive then access the Western Digital smart ware Cd and in the unlocker button double click it.I hope this if you follow this solution your problem is over.

Try downloading the device driver from western digital site for your respective OS. And try formatting it with the western digital inbuilt software, which works great.

Xp not recognizing my 250gb WD passport

The Western Digital My Passport line, besides the Essential Series, is originally formated for a Mac (in the HFS+ format) and as such cannot be read by Windows PCs. You can either get a program to read the External such as Macdrive, or format it to NTFS or FAT32; formats that are readable by Windows. I would recommend formatting it to NTFS, because you can only transfer up to 4 Gigabyte files to FAT32, while NTFS is nearly limitless.
