Question about Computers & Internet
I'm afraid what they told you is pretty much the truth. I don't know if Western Digital tried to help you to remember your password or not, most people use something familiar to them. A pets name, relative, birthdays or something from an area of interest. I myself make up acronyms from silly saying I make up to help me remember the passwords. This has the advantage of being easy to remember and very hard to figure out.
There are some password hacking programs that you can find on the web but most of them are not worth what they ask for them. If there is critical information on the HDD that you can't afford to lose then this might be an option albeit not one I would be able to make a recommendation about. There is also the possibility that Western Digitals data recovery service might be able to recover your data for you but it will most likely destroy the HDD.

I am afraid that without the password they are correct.
There is a method that may and I repeat "MAY" work but there is mixed results and I cannot guarantee any success.
There are many password kits available but I have not seen ANY for portable hard drives.
If I were you then what I would do is the following.
Take an image of the drive and store it elsewhere in the hope that one day you find such a piece of software.
Format the drive so that you can at least use it again.
For imaging software I would suggest either "clonezilla" which is FREE or norton ghost or acronis disk manager. The last two are paid software.
I am sorry to have to give you the same news as WD did but hopefully the link might work for you

Save hours of searching online or wasting money on unnecessary repairs by talking to a 6YA Expert who can help you resolve this issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
