This is from another fixya article but its relevant to your problem.

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directionscurved red lies at top/bottom with some double vi - 2c07611.pngrgence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos aroundimages.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Did you try to adjust the convergence? Sounds like it is out. If it will not converge, you probably have a bad convergence board.

You are welcome. If you do a search on this site, you will see many posts on the subject. This is a common problem, there is (are) two large IC's that control convergence. They tend to fail prematurely. I currently am in the process of getting mine fixed.

First time was under warranty. The entire board including the two chips was replaced. Failed a second time, after only 2 years!

Here is a link with pictures and an explanation of the repair. If you intend to do it yourself, you need a bit of skill with soldering and desoldering. Otherwise, you might try to get the entire board, or pull the board, get the parts and seek help of someone who can solder.

If you have the tools, and can solder, there are a number of sources for parts. The STK chips seem to be commonly used for this application. Of course you need to check to see which chips your TV uses. They should be replaced in pairs. I just placed an order for mine. Here is the page from the supplier.

    http://www.electronix.com/catalog/advanc...

After a quick look they had the best prices. There are multiple sources for the chips, however. Be sure to also order a small tube of heat sink grease for each chip. The chips have to be mounted to large heat sink aluminum fins, and the grease helps heat trasfer to the heat sink.

Note also, that you have to be careful when soldering the IC's not to cook them. Best way is to use a small 40 watt iron, clean tinned tip, and put a heat sink on the lead above the board. I use small hemostats clamped to the lead above the board, between the board and the body of the chip, then solder below the board.

Use a high quality, skinny resin core solder (you may want to order some when you get the chips).

    Good luck!

Thought you might be interested to know that I just fixed mine!

This job was a fair amount of work. Got the replacement chips from the site mentioned above, along with heat grease. Not easy. The IC's are 22 pin's in-line each. Desoldering the old chip took some time.

Feel free to email me if you attempt this repair for more detailed advice, based on my actual experience yesterday and today.

Line at top of screen

There are problems in the vertical blanking or scanning circuits. This is not something you can fix yourself at home. It involves troubleshooting the deflection amplifiers and scan generator areas to locate the defective components.

You will have to give the set out for service. I would suggest to get an estimate before proceeding. This type of repair can be costly for the labor to find the fault. If it is only generic type parts involved, the parts themselves will not be too expensive.
