I have oil leaking from my rear-right wheel. It seems to be coming from the rear dif. Is there a seal at the wheel?

Yes theres a seal from the axle shaft, but theres a also your brake cylinders. to find that you need to remove the tire and check the brakes or check the brake fluid reservoir for low fluid. either way you need to remove the tire. if its your axle seal then the pin theres pins on the actual differential to remove the axle shaft. a little more complicated. check the axle shaft to wear from the seal and bearings. also check the diffrential for a good level or you will loose the diffrential if you keep on running it. the level check is on a plug like half way that ususally removed by hand or a ratchet then stick your finger and if you dont feel it put oil on,. the proper oil level is when you can feel the oil with out sticking in a rod or stick in there. hope this helps

The difference in smell and thickness between the 2 liquids is very obvious.
Brake fluid is very thin

Give more information. What car, what year model? If there is oil where the flywheel is, chances are you have a leaking rear main bearing oil seal or leaking gear box primary shaft oil seal. Coil packs? They should be there to make the car go.

I have a 50s model jaguar wheels are seized up
its been stud for a long wile. you need to get the old oils out gear box engine oil /dif oil and put new oil in. then you need to take the wheels off and need to spray deep penetrating oil into the shafts. dif etc then this is going to be the worst part brake the brake pads of the front wheels clean the disc's and check piston for leaks as the rubber seal may have gone from rust. do same to drums on back. after all this is done it should be all right to move them but take it slow a few moves at a time. did all this to a jaguar sat for 30 years in a grass field underneath was nearly rotted through but was not my car and it is now all fixed and in car shows now. what ever you do don't try to run it with the engine, pull it with another car. can blow the gear box or engine or dif if you try to use the engine.only when it is free use the engine.

Here is the oil leaking Problem Identifying Technique

Engine oil leaks from the valve cover gasket are common.

  • The intake manifold plenum gasket may leak and cause increased oil consumption/burning and a spark knock during acceleration; the gasket should be replaced.
  • External oil leaks from valve cover gaskets, intake gaskets (front or rear), and the rear crankshaft (rear main) seal area are common. The rear main seal is an unlikely source. Normally, the bearing cap mating surfaces (as well as the sealing surface between the oil pan and bearing cap) are the source for the leaks.
  • Engine oil leaks at the distributor can be misdiagnosed as leaks from theintake manifold seal, oil pan gasket, or rear crankshaft (rear main) seal. A revised distributor is available if oil is found inside the distributor.
  • If the oil filter casing shows signs of distortion from excessive oil pressure, theoil pump should be replaced.
  • Often misdiagnosed as a leaking oil filter gasket, the oil filter adapter can seep from between the adapter and engine block.
  • Carbon buildup on the top of the piston is common. As the buildup increases with mileage and over time, symptoms may vary from light ticking, to ticking/hammering, to hammering/knocking noises. Fuel injector cleaner often solves the problem.

    Rear on a2004 astro van awd v-6 locks up when making turn's left or right.but does'nt do it when gowing forward or reverse.
    Rear end is a lockup dif. This couples both wheels.It has clutches that allow inner and outer weels to turn at different speeds when going around corner, thus eliminating most tire scrub. If noise is coming from dif. change dif oil and redress clutches.Driving in a straight line with a lockup dif. would not normally be noticed,because both rear wheels are travelling at the same speed.

    RIGHT REAR LEAKING GEAR OIL ON WHEEL
    Make sure that it is actually gear oil and not brake fluid from a leaking wheel cylinder first. If it is gear oil then you will have to have the rear axle removed and the seal replaced if that is where it is leaking from.

    Right rear axle leaking gear oil
    If it is the seal on the bearing, its not easy it is very time consuming, but this can also be the veiw if you have a brake cyl leak which can be caused by the brakes being exessevely worn in the rear end. I would take it to a shop and have them check it out,

    Look on the back of the wheels by going under the vehicle. and tell me if you see a light oil. I am sure yours is a sealed pumkin. If not the oil in the pumkin may have leaked out

    My BMW seems to be leaking oil from the rear underside
    the leak is most likely coming from either the differential cover gasket or the input flange that the drive shaft attaches to, this is called the pinion seal.

    1992 ford tempo oil leak?
    Definently sounds like the rear main seal. My 97' Dodge Ram has the same issue and it leaks in the exact spot and has the same symptoms. Changing the gasket on the rear seal in simple but it's hard to get it apart to get to it unless you have the right tools and mechanic know-how. Your car seems to be leaking more than mine so it seems to be worst, but it is most definently the rear main seal. I put gasket maker/sealer on mine and it temperarely stopped the leak but due to pressure it will always seem to start again. Your best bet is saving the money or if you have it, invest it and go ahead and have the problem fixed. Hope I was of some help.
