Kenmore 12 Chest Freezer - Needs New Lid

My freezer is around 16 years old and the plastic on the inside of the lid is all cracked and broken from my kids standing on it (wish I had known!). It has been getting ice/frost on the inside (with the insulation) and now the lid won't close snug. Can anyone recommend if I should try to replace the lid myself, know where I can get instructions to do so, or even if I can buy a new lid for it?

Thanks for your help!

All you need is the model number

It gives you a list of all parts you can buy to replace what's broken, as for the frost try placing a sheet of plastic over the insulation, under the the plastic cover to keep moisture and humidity out of the insulation.

Ice on the inside walls of chest freezer

Check the seal around the lid sits firmly on the rim, give it a good defrost before restocking. Make sure all else is working and clean, particularly any condenser grilles / fans.

Chest freezer ice is filling up around the top of the inner lid

Turn it off, remove the stock, tap the sides with a block of wood and scrape to the bottom of the freezer with a dustpan and scoop it out. Refit the stock and switch back on. Takes 10 minutes. Check the lid seals properly once defrosted and check it's not accidentally in superfreeze mode.

I have a woods chest style deep freeze and the lid is very cold on the outside, but the sides are room temperature and the freezer works fine. Why is the lid cold and how can I fix it

Yes, the freezer temperature means the lid gets very cold. Every time you open it some moisture condenses in the lid and the outside ambient also affects it. The insulation may be beginning to break down and the ice is forming inside. It is not a major problem however and many freezers go on for years with freezing lids!

Condensation forms around the freezer opening, between the rim and the seal.

The lid is warped or the seal is bad and leaking air.
Determine which it is and replace the seal or the lid.

Chest freezer lid repair

if your freezer has the sping etc in each of the hinges, then yes take them off. If your freezer has a torshon bar type spring, DO NOT take the hinges off, as you will not get it back together

i have always replaced liners with the door attached. The lid of the freezer is going to bow out of shape when you remove all the screws and take the old lining off, so you need to replace the lining and leave the screws loose so you can realine the door bit by bit.
it is a bastard of a job, and i wish you all the best.
