BCS chipper...clutch won't engage, blades don't turn

I have a BCS chipper with an 8 hp Briggs and Stratton motor. The motor runs fine, but does not turn the chipper blades. There's some sort of clutch that does not engage..and does not turn the v-belt wheel and does not turn the belt. (I can move the belt by hand, by grabbing it and moving it, and that will turn the blades.) How does the clutch work? How can I fix it?
Thanks. Joel in Sonoma

SOURCE: Motor runs but blade does not move. sounds like

It sounds like the spocket gear is stripped, the smaller gear drive may be stripped also. You will need to replace these parts. You can order them online at www.masterparts.net. The part should be listed in your owner's manual. If you do not have an owner's manual you can give your model number and I can try to find a copy for you. They also may have a parts break down Master Parts website. I hope this helps you!

SOURCE: Difficult to start chipper while gears engaged

The drive belt may be the wrong size if there is no play in the clutch. I have a 10 hp, but there is a common manual for the 10 and 8. My belt is a 4L380.

SOURCE: 5 hp briggs & stratton on a chipper/shreader

if the starter rope fails to retract, then you need to either fix a broken spring, or put a new one in. You'll have to take the engine cover off, and you'll be able to see how to take apart the retractor assembly. Often times, just the end of the spring will break off, and if you have a grinder, you can grind the correct shape in it again, and reinstall it as is.

I have a craftsman mower with the B&S 21hp Intek OHV motor, it starts fine but when you go to engage the blade or go forward or backward or release the parking brake it will die unless you disengage...

Check the switch on the seat, of all places. There's a safety switch on the seat that will kill the engine if it's not engaged when do anything other than start and run the engine.

If the switch checks out, get back with me.

if you mean that when you let off the clutch pedal and/or engage the blades, the engine dies, lift the seat and make sure the connector is firmly plugged into the switch attached to the seat.
