When this happens to me, I restart the computer and as it starts, I go into safe mode by pressing the F8 key numerous times. Do this as soon as you reboot the computer (but before you get the Windows splash screen.
Many times if you go into safe mode and the restart the computer, the problem is solved. If this does not fix it, restart, get into safe mode, and then do a system restore. Go back in time to a place where Windows was working.

If this doesn't work try the fix listed below:

One way to fix this problem is to use a USB external CD. I know, a pain and an extra piece of hardware, but when I saw the netbooks come out the first thing I thought of was--what if Windows doesn't start???
I have an adapter that will allow me to use a SATA or PATA device with a USB connector. I think you can get them for under $30. Very handy, indeed. You just set the Dell to boot from a USB device.

I apologize for the previous post, was a mistake. However, in this case what you normally press is space bar instead of enter. If you should leave it without pressing anything it should however automatically.
If this does not work there is a problem and I would suggest that you have windows reinstalled on your system.

I turn on my computer and i get a dell start up screen. and in the bottom right hand corner it says press f2 for setup or f12 for boot options.. then it goes to a black screen that says "media test...

Hi. Try these simple steps: Restart your computer and press F8 when you see the Dell Screen. In the advanced Windows Option, choose Last Know-Good Configuration and press Enter. If nothing happens and you didn't boot to windows, you may need to reset the system back to factory image.

To do that, Do the first 2 steps if you're using Vista. If you're using Windows XP, on the Dell logo, Press Ctrl+F11 to boot from the recovery partition. Follow the instructions to recover system back to factory image.

Hope it helps!

Computer will not boot up. I have tried to boot up in safe mode, normal, safe mode with prompt command...nothing works, just goes back to the normal start up screen and keeps doing the normal start up over...

It looks like you're encountering an endless reboot? Here's what to do to find the actual error message.

  1. Turn on the computer, and press F8 after the POST screen but before Windows attempts to start to access the advanced startup options.
  2. Select "Disable Automatic Restart On System Failure" and press Enter.
You should now get a blue screen with an error message and error codes. Please write these codes down and report back.

Problem restarting, "press r"

  1. Start the laptop
  2. when the logo screen turns black start pressing F8 a few times.
  3. A Windows Boot Options screen should show on the screen
  4. If you see the Windows Logo (the normal thing when Windows loads, then press reset and try again
  5. At the Windows Boot Options screen select "Last known good configuration" and press Enter twice
It "should" now load normally, if not then..
  1. Replace step 5 above with "Safe Mode" and see if that loads all the way through. If so, then restart and see if its OK now.
If not, then post back with any error messages and we can look at something else.

Laptop crashed

Try this:
  1. Turn on the laptop
  2. Wait for the first page to go blank.
  3. Start to press the F8 key repeadly
  4. You should get a Windows Start" page pop up that gives options on how you want to start Windows.
  5. If you see the Windows Logo (the screen you normally see when Windows starts) screen then just restart the laptop again.
  6. Choose "Last known Good Configuration" and press Enter.
If that fails then please post back and we can try some other things.
