Canon PIXMA MP830 not printing black ink. Other colors work fine on the test. It's the big black cartridge that isn't working. I took out the printhead, soaked it in rubbing alcohol and used a Qtip to clean all the areas of the printhead. I am using cartridges from inkfarm, not orignal Canon ones. They've been working fine. I was in the middle of doing a huge print job (over 1,110 pages) of black ink.

I'm answering my own question, as I just figured out how to fix this. The additional step was to used "canned air" to blast out the printhead slits. Everything works fine now.

  • The colors are incorrect on the Nozzle Test.

Black ink not printing. Will print a page fine that has color on it. If just black text on a page it is very light and sometimes skips every 3rd or 4th line

Seems like Black cartridge is either empty or clogged. If you are sure that cartridge got ink in it then remove it and soak (surface only) of the head into hot water for about 15 seconds and test it by rubbing the head onto a cloth. If no ink comes out then try again.

good luck

The printer will print ok in color, but will not print black ink. No copy or printing.

My best guess without knowing more is that your printer has both a color print cartridge and a black ink print cartirdge. Replace the black ink cartridge and you should be fine. You might also find that replacing the entire printer is less expensive....All the best!

Need to replace ink cartridge

http://reviews.cnet.com/multifunction-devices/pixma-mp830-office-all/4505-3181_7-31785803.html

Replacing the five ink tanks (cyan, yellow, magenta, black dye, and black pigment) is a simple task. The top of the printer flips up to reveal the ink tanks and the printheads, and by flipping a lever, you can pull out each tank individually. Being able to replace individual tanks is a boon, as you won't waste colors you use less frequently. Also, you won't need separate photo ink to print photos, which we appreciate. Canon ships the Pixma MP830 with full ink tanks. Replacement color and dye-based black ink tanks cost $14.25 apiece, while the pigment-based black ink tank costs $16.25. Canon estimates the cost per page for both black text and color text to be an inexpensive 2 cents.

Canon MP830 printing with interlacing shades of black

your printer cartridge or head unit ink channel (some of color or black ink channel) constipated, you may try:
1) if your ink cartridge is not new, take out the cartridge put the bottom surface touch cleaner liquid(special for ink printer) or water for 1 hr (you can see ink spread water), then set back and test. refill enough ink maybe necessary.
2) still trouble, you need clean print head ink channel to do same thing above, if your print head is separated from the cartridge.

Aligning the cartridge has nothing to do with the problem of the u150 error that two of the same ink tank cartridges are installed. It's a defective chip in the ink cartridge, as soon as I placed a new cartridge in it worked like a charm. HOLD ON TO YOUR INK CARTRIDGE RECEIPTS, because if this happens to you and the cartridge is obviously new....the store of purchase should provide you with a replacement (+ if you don't want to make a 2nd trip, some stores have the mp830 on display and you can have them toss the cartridge in and check to make sure the chip is working properly). IF THE STORE WON'T REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE CARTRIDGE, contact CANON (USA 1-800-828-4040)and explain the problem & hopefully the will stand behind their product and replace the defective cartridge.
