While searching for a used 4 track reel to reel I came across a TASCAM 34 but it has no manual and the owner knows nothing about it. What is it? Can I use it to transcribe some old 4 tracks to CD? What is it worth? Can a manual be found? Thanks

You should be able to find a manual for it, many free online sources. Yes you can use it for r-t-r playback to transfer to CD's. One in good condition will typically go for $300-$400.

Can't figure out how to mix down tracks to stero master on 2488 mk 2

Your owners manual can be found at manualslib.com by searching your model number and choosing manualslib under the heading TASCAM 2488MKII OWNER'S MANUAL Pdf Download.
Tascam has a help line at 323-727-7617. If you haven't done your homework in deciphering the users manual, I would not call them. Their service is free, but their on phone time for help is limited and they can be quite surly.

Chat room

If he had it done by a person who knows what he is doing he most likely used a 1/2 track tape recording device. These are different than 1/4 track unit as they are used professionally an for mastering. You would need to find a 1/2 track type deck to play the tape back- they are made by Tascam, Otari, Studer, Pioneer, Sony and other lesser brands.

Where I found the Pan funcion?

Here is a link to the manual:http://www.tascam.com/products/2488mkii;9,16,109,19.html Go down to Resources, Documents. As far as I know you have to map your input to a track. If you want Stereo you have to use 2 tracks. The owners manual explains it better than I can here.

Play back on Sanyo mr-929 reel-to-reel tape recorder is backwards

I also have an MR-929. The information that you need is in the 'Stereophonic 4 track stereo''. As stereo is only two tracks, there is another 2 tracks in addition to the one you are listening to. Wind the entire reel to the empty spool, and then play that. As you have to physically turn the reel over to do so, you should then hear the other tracks (or track, if recorded in mono).
I use my 929 to play my parents recording of my family from the late 60s, which were recorded on a valve (tube) Ferguson machine, which had a green "magic eye" level indicator, which as a child I found fascinating!
