You are correct in your assumption. The problem you describe are consistent with the start relay on the compressor. It will act this way then eventually quit all together if not replaced.
The relay is attached to the compressor. Pull the frig out and unplug the power cord. Take the lower panel off the back, the compressor will have a black plastic cover on one side of it. Under this cover is the relay.
The relay will go bad from overheating. Be sure the coils are clean and the fan by the coils is running.
