You may have the wrong model ink cartridge for the printer, the ink model required is HP 21 and 22. Be sure you have the correct positioning to insert the cartridge, the longest flat end shoudl face up, and the smaller 'bump' should be pointing down and be on the end that goes in first.
I ve been having the same problem with my Epson 1290 and Windows Vista! It works fine but I cant get the status info on my ink levels. Its so annoying when u run out of ink the LED on the printer goes on but you dont know whick cartridges to replace! I hope Microsoft and Epson get this sorted out because it so annoying and I end up spending more money on inks than needed! I read someone had similar problem, installed the 1290 M driver (via Vistas set drivers) but it didnt work for me!
