There is a GFI on the bottom right hand corner of the heater. It is a black box with 5 wires on the bottom in this order: blue, white, green ground, black, and white. The voltage across the blue/white should be about 100VAC and the voltage across the black/white should also be 100VAC. If the black/white isn't registering any voltage, the gfi is tripped.

The GFI typically trips due to moisture in the unit; however, it can also be fried if there was a voltage surge while you were gone. Use a hair dryer to dry up any moisture inside the unit, specifically around the GFI. If the water is pooling or you see a visible drip coming from the top of the heater, you heat exchanger is probably leaking and needs to be replaced.

If you have voltage on both sides of your gfi, check the voltage at the remote terminals. You should have 15VDC. If there is no voltage, you circuit board is damaged and needs to be replaced. If there is voltage at the remote terminals but no display on your remote, then check your remote wiring.

I bought a brand new house and the gas water heater seems to be stuck in vacation mode.

Copy following link to troubleshoot by type of gas control valve, instructions how-to-light-water-heater, including error codes etc:
To reset the intellivent gas control, press and hold both arrow buttons for about 5 seconds
This water heater requires pilot flame. Look through site glass and upward (or use mirror) to see if pilot is ON and burning clear blue flame and not lazy yellow flame.
Check that gas shut-off is parallel to gas line:
Check if outlet has 120Volt, and that polarity of outlet is correct. Power vent water heaters require correct polarity: use circuit analyzer. Check if there is ground continuity between ground and manifold tube (center tube that connects between burner and gas control valve).
Scroll to top of same link to read about FV system and air intake cleaning. Must have good supply of incoming air.
Same page half way down has troubleshoot section for pressure switch testing, blower troubleshoot etc. The pressure switch and blower communicate electrically with gas control thermostat to determine when to release gas to burner where pilot ignites gas, causing poisonous combustion by-product to vent outdoors and help nature.
This model has thermopile instead of thermocouple. Basically thermopile is several thermocouples. When heated, thermopile generates enough current to run small electronic circuit inside gas control valve. This circuitry is very common in hvac units but fairly recent to water heaters. Advantage is error code troubleshoot and more optional controls, for example future response to in-home zwave remote controls and home automation
Get model number and brand from label on side of tank and post question on pro water heater forum with list of what you have tried so far.
Call plumber to bleed air out of gas line and check gas pressure.

Open following link for White Rodgers intelli-vent gas valve thermostat:

1) Typical instructions for Kenmore and AO Smith water heater with Intelli-vent say:
Set on-off switch to ON position.
Hold down both arrow buttons for 1 second.
Then press hotter button.

2) Also check that 120Volt electrical outlet has power, and check outlet with cheap circuit analyzer from home center.
3) If Intelli-vent gas valve thermostat is malfunctioning, and won't reset, then contact manufacturer of water heater for replacement gas valve.
Label on side of tank will have Model number, manufacturer, type of gas LP NG, serial number for part ordering.

50 gal GE PowerVent Water Heater, about 1 every 2 weeks we get an error message and NO hot water, we were told by the Warranty Tech people that we have to set the mode to vacation and then back again...???...

Your water heater is under warranty?
And tech folks are telling you that you have to 'reset' the water heater.
And the tech folks seem aware of the product defect, but don't offer a permanent fix.
That's ridiculous.

You shouldn't have to reset the MODE or do any other thing to that water heater for many years.

50 gallon power vent model cost a lot of money.
And you got a defective product.
And the tech people know it.
That's certainly not an installation issue, or a homeowner issue, that is a product issue.
The manufacturer is responsible.

Read the warranty papers and find out what the warranty says.
Look for the word 'defect' in the warranty paper
Document when the problem started and what you were told.

If you bought the water heater from Home Depot, it's time to contact them about a defective product.
And let Home Depot know what the warrant says about defect.
A small claims action against Home Depot will give you satisfaction.
Small claims court will want to see your stack of paperwork that shows how much trouble you went through to get a functioning and dependable water heater.

As far as fixing the water heater, it sounds like a professional plumber would be a good bet at this point.
Frankly, I would buy another heater and roll the defective one out of the way.
Bradford White, AO Smith manufacture and sell water heaters through plumbers.
Once these unit are installed, the warranty is provided by the installer.

No power

Since I don't have a brand or model number, I'm assuming its a limit switch that needs to be reset. If not, it's possible that while you were away, you experianced a power surge and blew the board. Check for any place that could have a fuse.
