You need to go to new egg or tiger direct and order an esata card and install it in the machine. Then you need to make sure that the drivers load and windows sees it. Then you need to attach the drive to the connection in the back of the computer.
The coverters for usb to esata dont show any gains in speed. You are still dealing with the usb speed. Even usb 2 and 1394 firewire dont have the speed of esata so I gather that you know what you are looking for and the reason that you are wanting it.

I've found a card that that has two sata channels. Model: Rosewill RC212. (These two channels can be jumpered to be internal sata or external sata channels.) I will configure the card to have two external sata channels. I will connect the external hard drive appropriately. I will leave the primary internal hard drive connected as it now is to the motherboard. I am hoping that there is no conflict between the motherboard controller and the card. How does this all sound. Does it sound about right.

How to format/install SATA 2TB hard drive (BARRACUDA) in Gateway GT5098E, Win XP Media Center Edition 2005?

Windows XP doesn't support SATA. You will need to use a program such as Nlite to integrate sata drivers into a new Windows XP disc. Once you have a disc with sata drivers just boot to the disc and follow the prompts to format the drive.

Hello jnickcrispin
Go back to a previous date when your computer was booting smoothly . Use System restore for this : go to start , type restore in the search bar and select system restore .
Maybe there is a malware infection somewhere in your system : download and run MalwareBytes from
http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html and scan your pc .
Once done , create an image of your entire system , it's easy under Windows 7 : go to start type backup
in the seach bar and select back up entire system . At the end of the operation , click Yes to create a System Repair Disc . Do this regularly , every time you made significient changes or saved new important data on your machine .
There is of course another option easy and radical if you own the Win 7 install disc : install a new fresh version of Win 7 but save all needed data before proceeding !
Best regards ,
fanaudi .

If you bought a full retail version and not an upgrade, you may need to do a fresh installation of windows. You also need to make certain that your gateway model is able to upgrade to windows 7. Checking your computer's support page, there are no BIOS updates available. Your computer should be fully capable of upgrading to windows 7 from windows Vista. ALso looking at Gateway's support page for this model, there are no drivers offered for Windows 7. All drivers offered are for windows Vista. I have seen computers in the past that will not tolerate an operating system change from the system that was installed at the factory.

If you have a restore partition, you can back up your data, and do a clean install of windows after formatting your hard drive. You may also want to make recovery disks for your computer in case the Win 7 will take on your computer or you cannot get your hardware to work with Win 7 since Gateway offers no Win 7 drivers.
Good luck. Take precautions to back up data and be able to revert to your original factory settings if necessary.

Am trying to reistall Win XP. Have run Fdisk and reformatted HDD. PC will not recognise install CD, keeps coming up with errors, does not find CD or HDD. Hav also tried running setup from floppy, again...

IF the hard drive is a SATA hard drive, you will first of all need to download the SATA drivers for te motherboard and copy them to a Floppy drive on another computer if yours will not work, this may also affect why it is not "seeing" the Cd drive if this is a SATA one too

Try installing Windows and when the message " press F6 if you want to ...." appears, have the floppy inserted in teh floppy drive so it can find thr SATA drivers, it will then recognise the Hard drive and install

If you have further problems please repost

I am unfamiliar with the options for this website but it should be on the home page for purchasing service.

AHCI is only required to support certain features of SATA drives like hot swapping and you may need to load drivers during Windows install to be able to use the SATA drive. This is normally only required for SCSI but some SATA drives also require it. Windows 7 has some native support for SATA so it should not be REQUIRED, only needed for advanced features. Are you reinstalling Windows on a computer that you modified? Or is this computer still in factory configuration? Please describe what is happening when you start the computer and any error messages (exactly) that appear.
