Wiper motor starting making a noise (almost a grinding noise) next day when I turn on wipers they moved up about 2" and then totally stopped in place. Can't get them to budge. I also thought i noticed the wipers moving a bit slower then normal before this problem.

If upon turning the switch, you hear either a buzzing or a noise coming from the wiper area but no movement of the windshield wipers, then it becomes likely that there is a mechanical problem. In front wiper systems, there are two moving parts, the wiper motor and the wiper transmission. In rear wiper systems with a single wiper, there’s a single moving part, the wiper motor.

If you hear a buzz, it could be a motor straining to move a jammed wiper transmission or a locked motor gear. If you hear a grind coming from the wiper area, it could be a stripped gear in either the motor, the transmission or where the wiper arm splines to the wiper motor in the rear. Don’t let the term transmission fill you with dread; it’s simply a term for a multi-lever set of arms and hinges that turn the circular motion of the wiper motor into the side to side motion of the wiper arms. It is also possible that the spline on the post of the front wiper arms is stripped.

Generally speaking, you can reach the motor and transmission by removing the wiper arms, all the screws that hold the cowl beneath the wiper arms and the weather stripping. Once exposed, you should be able to remove the motor from the transmission and check to see if the transmission is binding or if the motor is the culprit. Simply, replace the culprit, and reassemble.

If the problem is with the rear wiper system, getting to the wiper motor can be more difficult with far more trim to remove than with a front system. You may elect to consult your mechanic for help.

Something in the assembly is binding and stripping out the motors. Check the pivots in the linkages for friction and wear.

The wipers lost their index... Turn the car on, turn the wipers on, shut the car off when the wipers reach their full down position. Turn the wipers off, the. Turn the car back on. This should relearn the wiper index.

It is either time to replace the wiper motor or the arm has disengaged from the transmission. does the motor make any sounds when the wiper switch is activated? Also, does one work and not the other? If neither wiper moves or makes the usual noises i would suspect the switch inside the car. hope this helps and good luck.

-You mean There is 12 V at motor terminal when you turn on the switch.
-Okay now disconnect power at motor and hook up voltmeter to motor terminal in Ohm. Any reading...?
-No. motor is bad.
-Yes. The motor is Okay.
-Next check ground terminal from motor to any metal part of the car in Ohm. Any reading?
-No. >>Need to redone ground from motor.

sounds like the gears inside of the wiper mechanism have gone bad. there is a strip of gears in the shape of a half moon that the wiper motor rides on in order to move the wiper blade back and forth. When those gears strip out the wiper will only move a certain distance and then stop. One way to tell is if you can move the wiper arm by hand. When the gears are good the wiper arm should not move at all by hand.

You need to check the wiper pivot at the motor assembly, it could have worn out.

either linkage broke/ jammed or motor is stuck -makin noise but not movin open hood and with wiper on feel motor- its on firewall-for movement if moving turn off motor now try to move wipers if move freely than they are broken off or have disconnected from the motor need to remove the cowl to access the wipers linkages

1.  Turn on your wipers and pop your hood.   2.  If you hear you wiper motor, then you do not need to check your fuses. 3.  If your wiper arms are moving freely, then your linkage from the wiper arms to the motor is disconnected and possibly broken.   4.  If the problem is electrical, do the following:      1.  Check the fuse, and check for power at the fuse.      2.  Check the wiper motor for ground. For a complete circuit, you need power going in and ground               coming out.  Check electrical connections for corrosion or poor connections.       3.  Get a wiring schematic and trace power to the wiper motor starting at the fuse box in the                       following order:           Fuse box           wiper switch           wiper motor      4.  In the rarest of cases a wiper motor or wiper switch is at fault.  I do not recommend replacing                 anything unless you have proof that the part is faulty. (ie. power going into the switch but nothing           coming out.)
