Replacing a battery on a scooter can be a simple task, providing that you have an understanding of basic electrical skills. Unfortunately, most scooters conceal their batteries under their plastic skins. While the battery's whereabouts are listed in their owner's manuals, most used scooters are sold without the manual. This leaves the new owner to play hide and seek in order to find the battery. Luckily, finding and replacing the battery is very easy.
Things You'll Need:

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Battery

Locate the scooter's battery compartment. On most scooters, the battery will be housed in a tray mounted under the seat or in a compartment beneath the floor board. If the battery is housed under the floorboard, remove the battery panel with a Phillips screwdriver.
Disconnect the wire leads that connect the scooter's wiring to the battery's terminals. Use a Phillips screwdriver to loosen the screws, starting with the negative (-) terminal first followed by the positive (+) terminal. Pull the old battery out of the compartment or tray. Take note of the orientation of the original battery.
Insert the new battery into the tray or compartment, orienting it in the same direction as the original battery. Use a Phillips screwdriver to connect the wiring leads to the battery's terminals, starting with the positive (+) lead followed by the negative (-) lead.
Replace the battery cover panel or close the seat.
Tips & Warnings
  • Charge the new battery completely before installing it into your scooter. A partially charged battery will not provide the necessary voltage, preventing your scooter from operating properly
  • To prevent the risk of a serious electrical shock or short-circuit, do not allow the negative (-) wire lead to contact the frame.
  • Do not connect the negative (-) lead to the positive (+) terminal, or vice versa, to prevent damage to the scooter's electrical system.

Scooter Battery Maintenance

Are you frustrated every summer by a scooter that won't start at least once a week? You probably aren't maintaining your battery properly, and you might be causing damage to your scooter's electrical system if you're jump starting from an automobile.

    Buying a battery
  1. Consult your scootetr's owner's manual to make sure you have an appropriate model battery for your vehicle. In fact, it's a good idea to take the manual with you while shopping for all your scooter equipment.
Batteries for motorcycles and scooters are notorious for wearing out or breaking down ahead of schedule. It's a good idea to get a battery with at least a 6-month warranty.
  2. Removing the Battery
  3. If you need to replace the battery or take it out of your scooter to recharge it, start by unscrewing the negative wire first, followed by the positive. When you're reinstalling or replacing the battery, this process should go in reverse order--positive, then negative.
  4. Storage
  5. If you need to store your scooter for an extended period such as winter, disconnect the battery from your vehicle to avoid the slow and steady drain from things like clocks. Make sure that the battery has a full charge before you start it in the spring.
  6. Maintenance Do's and Don'ts
  7. Don't charge your battery up with your scooter, if it can be avoided, and don't jump start your battery with a car. Instead, use a battery charger to keep your battery charged, and be sure that it's set on the proper voltage.
Replace the spark plugcommander victory XL4 How do you fit new battery - mag-glass_10x10.gif as often as possible; monthly is ideal, but probably not necessary unless you use your scooter to commute.
Check your fuses often and make sure that your fuseholder doesn't have corrosion. If it does, replace it.

Good luck.

Pride victory xl4 does not work when key is on i have taken it out put it in nothing happens

Some good advice here. If nothing works it could be that the hidden main fuse has blown, (one cause might be shorting the XLR three pin charger socket by getting it wet or a faulty charger connection. The hidden high amp fuses that Pride doesn't tell you about are under the main floor mat and trapdoor. First disconnect the batteries then remove the large central floor mat. (if you have trouble refitting it later glue it back using clear silicone bath sealent nscrew and remove the hatch lid and very carefully locate the fuse box containing two high amp standard car fuses, check and if nessary replace the blown one with the same amperage rating

Celebrity XL4, when going up hill, power cuts out. turn key off and back on, scooter will go again for a couple of feet.

Sounds like Overload Cutout ??? Use a Higher Rating Cutout, as going up hill is very hard on Scooters and it also depends on your weight.

Shoperrider no drive just a click

Hi. Sounds to me as if you have a sticky carbon brush in the motor. Each brushe is held in the motor by small black plastic or bakealite cap that screw in the outside or the brush holders. If these caps are not tight enough then the brush or the spring will arc from the side of the brush holder. This causes the brush to become jamed, and does not contact with the commutator on the armature.
You need to remove the brushes, check that they slide freely in the brush holders, fit new springs if neccessary, and reassemble. If the brushes are too tight, the file very carefully on the sides to allow them to move freely. Do not tighten the black plastic caps too hard or they will break, but they have to be snug. Be carefull.
Good luck. Neil.
