Check the cleaner feed hose length. It should be just long enough to reach the farthest part of the pool. If it is longer it may need to be cut down. Also look inside the fitting that connects the feed hose to the pool wall. There should be a small metal screen. It may have to be cleaned out to allow proper water flow. If the screen is missing then the jets inside the pool cleaner could be clogged. Make sure the feed hose floats are spaced evenly or arranged so that the hose is floating at the surface. Also there are jets on the back of the cleaner that can be adjusted that may help it pull loops out. One other thing is the head float that is at the top of the cleaner next to the debris bag. Make sure it doesnt have water inside of it. If it does have water in it then replace it.

All great answers and advice from poolmann974, they should always be checked as he said and routinely. but... in regards to tangling, probably not the issue???

Belive it or not... too many swivels add to the problem!
Most people think if I add a swivel here where it begins to coil then tangle, it will fix the problem, but yet the problem remains!!!

The manufacturer recommends this for the proper layout of the hoses; from the wall all the way to the head:

If the hoses are old, then they may not be pliable any longer and should be replaced. All three sections: 1 clear soft hose And 2 white not so soft hoses.

  • First, determine the deepest part of the pool/pool "Depth"
  • That is how "Long" the 1st hose is to be. The softer clear hose
  • Now... Attach all the hoses together, 1st hose already cut per the above and the other two "White" hoses - UNCUT.
    • Place the head at the point on the deck where the wall adaptor is for the hose to attach
  • Walk around the pool holding the wall adaptor
    • Move your hand forward towards the edge of the pool to mark the total length of the pool, if you come to a point where your hand is over the water, hose is too short, move your hand back, if your hand is too far back away from the waters edge, the hose too long
  • Once you get back to the starting point, you should now know how long the hose needs to be. You could probably have 1' - 4', maybe more maybe less? Take note of the excess hose, that will need to be cut off, too long of hose will only tangle up. BUT WAIT, THERES MORE....
    • You may think that I now just cut off the excess length? You would be wrong!!!
    • Lets say you have 4' of excess hose...
    • Follow the hose in your hand to the next swivel, disconnect it.
    • NOW Cut. But... cut off 2' from one of the white hoses, AND 2' from the other white hose.
    • Reconnect the swivel. You have now cut off 4' of excess hose.
Recap: What you have done is with the 3 pieces of hose is cut it & adjusted it to the correct lengths. The soft hose is as long as the pool is deep. The two White Harder pieces are Exactly Even!! The way it should be!

Now, the Back up valve will be placed on the soft hose about 3-4' away from the head.

Follow this and the hose should not tangle. And...
And heed any advice about storing the hose coiled as it is not good, = ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!
Whenever storing, always store in a straight line, otherwise it will retain the memory of the coil. If this has happened, place & lay it straight on your deck in the sun, that should relax it and erase any memory of a coil.

Good Luck

TANGLED POOL HOSES

Tangling is sometimes problematic with the cleaners. If any of the hoses have gotten stiff it is time to replace them. If the hoses are still soft and pliable, you may need to add more swivels to the hose. This helps a lot, and make sure there is a swivel within 3 feet of the cleaner itself.

VIPER 5500 SPINS AROUND IN CIRCLES CAUSING HOSE TO GET TANGLED. ANY SUGGESTIONS WHY?

There are a couple of things that you should try if this pool cleaners hose is frequently becoming tangled. Make sure that your floats are evenly and correctly spaced. One float should be 18" inches from each end and a third float located in the middle, 5 feet from either end. You should also make sure that the hose length is not too long for your pool size. Your spin out might be too high. Try moving it to a lower setting and then running the cleaner again.

I HAVE HAYWARD NAVIGATOR POOL CLEANER. MY HOSE TWIST UP WHEN IN USE.

With these pool cleaners, it might not be the hose. It could be that your cleaner head has water and is floating, causing the hose to tangle. Check for that problem. If not, it could be that your hose is too long for the pool size that you have. You might need to remove sections on the hose to shorten it.

Does not move through entire pool but gets tangled at the weir all the time

Is this a new cleaner or old? how old? As these cleaners get old say a year or two, parts wear out and effect the performance. Also a number of other things can effect the performance. For example if the cleaner and hose get left out of water and the hose gets tangled if will develop a memory and can greatly effect the way it runs. sometimes adding a hose or two, or removing, or even twisting each hose a quarter turn with change the way they run. You can often adjust the eyeball return fittings to redirect the water and push a cleaner a certain way or have it avoid an area. Let me know if you need more help

Hose gets twisted all of the time Have replaced almost everything

Try laying the hose out on the ground and stretching it out as straight as you can get it. Let if sit this way in the sun for several hours. You might have a warp in the hose material that is causing these tangles. Allowing it to sit stretched in the sun for several hours will help. Also, try readjusting your return lines. They could be interfering with the pool cleaners pattern and causing the cord to become tangled.

My polaris keeps getting tangled up. How dod I fix this?

If the hose on these pool cleaners is becoming tangled, there are a couple things you will want to check. Remeasure the hose to verify that it is adjusted to the proper length for your pool shape. With the cleaner operating, check that the swivels in the hose and the hose connections turn freely. Make sure the feed hose if floating. Then, with the Polaris turned off, spin each of the wheels. Make sure they are all turning together and adjust if they are not.

Check your pool cleaners hose to make sure that it is not becoming tangled. Storing the hose in a coiled position will cause this. If it is not moving and it is not the hose, you could have a leak in a connection somewhere. If the cleaner is getting adequate suction, it should be moving. Try adjust the hose weights to make sure the cleaner is at a 45 degree angle to the pools floor.

What model is it? Is it robotic (indepentdent of your pump and filter)? If it is attached to your pump system, it could be the cord getting tangled and causing the pool cleaner to move in circles. You might want to consider running it when you are available to watch it or getting a robotic cleaner that you can set to operate at certain times. You might just need to check the hose for defects that would cause it tangle.

Krauly gets tangled in the hose constantly and will not untangle

With these pool cleaners, that is almost always going to be a problem with your hose balance. To determine if your balance is correct, turn off the pump and observe the cleaner. Hose balance is correct if the cleaner's seal rests flat on the pool floor and drive tubes make a 45 degree angle with the floor. If the hose rises toward the surface at an angle greater than 45 degrees, move the weights closer to the cleaner or move the first two weights closer to each other. If the hose sags at less than a 45 degree angle, move the weights away from the Kreepy Krauly or separate the first two weights away from each other.

Barrcuda inground pool cleaner flips over

Often when you are having this problem with automatic pool cleaners, it has to do with the hose. Make sure that you have plenty of slack in the hose to cover the entire pool. Also, make sure that you do not have any obstructions in the hose and that it is not tangled.
