Question about Garden

My Craftlman lawn mower stopped running in the middle of mowing the lawn. Engine YTPXS.1951BA Engine model 143.016722. The rope would not pull and the blade would not move. Checked the dip stick, no oil. Added oil and let mower cool. I moved the blade back and forth which finally freed. Tried to start but would not fire. Pulled the spark plug to Checked for spark but can not see any at the spark plug. When I pull the cord the engine sounds fine. Put my finger over the spark plug hole and cranked engine, I can feel compression. Is it the magnito? Yes it has gas.

Either the magneto or the off switch is stuck in closed position, If you have dead man's control make sure that it is activated when you go to start the motor.

SOURCE: Problem mowing my lawn.

I had the same problem and I already found those recommended solutions\ causes on the web:
1. The motor isn't on full throttle.
2. The blade is upside down.
3. The grass is too high when cutting it.
4. Overlap your cuts.

It helped my problem/ I hope it will help yours too!

SOURCE: cannot pull rope out to start mower

Bad news , Mower has sit up too long and the piston / crankshaft has become rusty and froze in place. (fix) buy some liquid wrench it comes in a can at your local hardware store...Tilt the mower onto its front wheels and remove the spark plug. Fill the Cylindar with the oil and leave it for a couple days. after a few days lean the mower back and attempt to pour out the left over oil. Then (Check Your Oil level) preferable replace old oil and pull choke..and start mower...if the engine is still frozen (Buy a New mower) 125bucks Sears.

SOURCE: Lawn mower died. Pull rope locked up

remove the spark plug and try to pull the rope. Sometimes the coil can get loose and wedge against the flywheel. if that's not the problem then pour a little oile in the spark plug hole, let it set a bit, if it still won't turn over then you have an internal engine problems. Not very common but it can happen

SOURCE: ROPE ON MOWER WON'T PULL OUT

I agree, it sounds like the mower is fouled with foliage at the blade. Pull off the spark plug wire and tilt the mower on its side opposite of the carburetor, check the underside of the mower for impacted grass clippings.

engine getting hot. Take rope pull off and clean off all the air fins on the cylinder block, use air how and do a good cleaning. If flywheel still have all the cooling fins it should help the problem or even solve it. Keep mower airways clean.

How do I repair the pull cord on a masport 600 mower - the cord snapped when I was trying to start it.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly

- Remove the recoil assy. Depending on engine model you may hae to remove the air shroud with the recoil.
- Remove the broken rope assy from the spool by lifting the knot out of the hole and cut off the knot.
- Pull the remainder of the old rope out of the recoil spool
- Take the remainder of rope out of the pull handle

On the new rop burn the ends with a match. With wet fingers pinch the ends of the rope while hot/melted until it is the same size as the rope. Form a point on the ends
- Install the new rope in the handle by threading it into the handle and tie ONE small knot on the end of the trheaded through rope.
- Pull very hard on the rope until the new knot seats in the handle. Assemble handle.
- PREWIND the spool in the recoil until it stops winding. I.e. max out spring tension but do not over wind it or you will break the spring. Make sure NOT to wind it in the wrong direction or you will break the spring
- Back off the spool until the knot hole is aligned with the rope guide bushing on the outside of the recoil.
- Either use a C-clamp or a 2nd person to hold the pre-wound spool in place.
-Thread the new rope through the outer rope guide and into then through the knot hole in the spool.
-Tie ONE small knot in the rope and pull it HARD back into the knot hole until the knot seats in the knot hole.
-Release C-clamp or have 2nd person let go of the spool. The rope will rewind into the recoil assy.
-reinstall recoil/air shroud on the engine.

That should get you mowing again.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

If you think the rope pulls too easily the engine may not have enough compression. Consider doing a compression test or a leak-down test on the cylinder.

Pull rope seems to be locked up...won't pull

make sure you can turn the blade by hand, make sure grass isn't stopping the blade after that make sure the break cable isn't bad, sometime's the cable don't disengage the break from the flywheel. Hope this works.
