Sounds like the flyback transformer, when they start to fail they start arching between the windings internally and make a noise as you described.

    Thanks Rockitman,

I will try and purchase a flyback transformer do you know where I can purchase one? Also where is this transformer located on the chassis, and does it need to be desoldered or does it snap out? The last person who used the tv set said she saw the "at&t ok" title screen, which to me that meens we had picture then but when she coundn't get past the title page and turned the tv off and then I turned it back on several hrs. later I cant even get the title page on. I dont know if this helps you understand the situation better, but I thought it might help. I've checked all wires going in and out of the back of the tv and cable units, everything is tight and seems to have a good connection.

Here is a link to a good source for the parts (Its located on the power board) and when you see the one needed for your model, you will know exactly where it is and how to install it.

    Thank's Rockitman'

I will take a look and see if I can find the right one that resembles one from the link you sent me. Maybe there is a part number on the transformer that I can use so I get the right one.

    Thank's so much, JR Barbe

    Hi Rockitman,

I checked out the flyback trans. and still am unsure of a replacement, there is a # on the part but it doesn't match any of the part #'s on the website??? I also was reading some other problems that others were having with the same tv, and decided maybe since I did a IC replacement I should check all pluged wires that might have loosened when I did that repair. I checked and turned on tv but still the same thing, so I wiggled and jiggled the chassis to see if that might get some action but did not get any results. I started back on the flyback trans. and plugged set in and listened again, and found something interesting. I got a funnel and tube and held it up to the flyback trans. and covred it with a shroud of sorts and did hear the chirping but not as loud as in the rear of the middle chassis area. Could there be something else that could be making that noise or could it be that the IC's are going again??? I used sanyo stk 120's should I have used 150's or the 180's??? All resistors look good and are testing ok with the volt meter. If it is the IC's, I'm woundering how much heat transfer grease I should be applying for proper protection, I made sure I covered the whole backside and had appx. 1/32" of layer is that good or should it be thicker or thinner. They were identicle IC's and I payed $18.00 for each one and they came with a warantee but I cant seem to find my reciete, but I was also under the impression that they should last quite a while. I was planning on purchasing a replacement kit for the light tubes, and will try to get the flyback trans. at the same time. I guess this is as good a time as any to just replace these things since we have this current problem. Thanks for all you expertise, JR Barbe

It could be the IC's going out again but I highly doubt it, I would just continue on your plan of action as it sounds to the best solution and covers all the bases.

The tv is a Magnavox 51MP392H/17 and has sound but no picture. Any ideas?

TV is in high voltage shutdown protection mode. Check to see if Horizontal output transistor is shorted or open. If not then resolder all solder joints on HV transformer. If this does not fix it then you will need to do voltage checks off of H.O.T. and then possibly a bad HV transformer.

Actually I have this TV and you need 2 Convergence IC's STK392-120's (120's and 150's will work) of course order 2 of the same type I'm using replacement 150's they allow for a little higher heat and were cheaper ALSO you need to replace the 12 resistors with 6.8 ohm metal film resistors, make sure they are metal film! don’t skimp out here I did and then they blew and fried my IC's and I had to replace everything again!

Great reference link that I posted pictures on, check out page 3

Where I got all my parts that worked:
Suburban Electronics http://www.suburban-elect.com/

Manual Library you should find all you need here:
http://www.techlore.com/group/2/list_downloads

What you need:
(2) STK392-120 OR STK392-150 IC chips
(12) 6.8 Ohm Metal Film resistors
set of star screw drivers
15 watt pencil solder pencil, DO NOT use a high watt iron you will fry the surface mounted item.
good leaded solder, and flux

BTW if you don’t plan on trying this and are going to throw out the TV, I still need a IC convergence board for a 51MP392H/17 TV I'm fixing, I'm willing to pay S/H and buy your IC board that’s not been tampered with. Edwinkraus@hotmail.com

I'll post you my general message which is for a similar Philips Magnavox 51 inch TV, you'll need to check the manual verify the correct IC convergence chips and resistors, the manual link is below as well... usally the IC's are STK392-120's or 150's and the resistors are 6.8 ohm 12 of then...

anyway read the general post below it will get you headed in the right direction.

Sounds like your Convergence chips failed, were your red/blue/green colors slowly seperating or was the picture starting to curve on the top or bottom or both? if so see below general post.
Also what model # is your TV and what size?

I have a Magnavox 51" Projector TV. Model 51MP392H/17

Hello bullmuscle,

This is a power supply problem, I would suspect the HV power supply because the primary and secondary supplies anymore are tied to the HV power supply. This type of repair requires certain pieces of equipment, to test voltages, look at signals, and to if need be test for shorts in inductors (Switching PS transformer and Flyback transformer). I would not recommend that you try to fix this yourself, The cost for this type of problem is not that expensive and can be done in one evening, if the parts are available. You may be fortunate and it could be just a blown fuse, in the HV or LV power supply circuit

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Shuttle83
