Question about Buffalo Technology 1TB DriveStation TurboUSB (2x500) External Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hi, I have a 1TB Buffalo External Hard Drive. It was working normally while we were backing up a computer that hasn't been working well. While trying to copy a large amount of data, the computer went into stand by and it stopped transferring data. The transfer was canceled and the computer restarted. Now it recognizes the hard drive in terms of saying that you can eject it but it doesn't appear in My Computer. It's now making an odd clicking noise all the time. Any ideas?

It's not working on two different computers which it has previously worked on. There is no installation CD, it's just a plug and play device. In device manager, it appears to come up as 'USB Mass Storage Device' at the moment and device manager fluctuates between saying 'it's working properly' and 'the device cannot start (Code 10)'. Before this problem, it was listing it by its proper name.

Could the problem be related to the fact that it was stopped mid transfer?
Why would the device be making the unusual clicking/loading noises?

Thanks for your help. Any more ideas?

You probably have to reinstall it ..if it has some kinda driver ..or remove it ..and plug it back in order to be seen again ...The actual move that you can do if it is not seen again ..is to go to the device manager ..by right click on my computer and than properties,,,,,,hardware ..device manager ...In here try to look for the Hdd by name ...if you do not see it ..just click (right) on computer ..and choose scan for hardware changes...This should get it back ...even if it is not installed ..at least like a unknown device ..
The issue that might happen and make it block ..is that you exceed the maximum capacity that it is allowed to store.. and it will need a forced entry and delete some of the data ...When they are formatted usually the partition are made and some about 5% of the space is left raw ..like un-partitioned space ..just to leave room for moving files and such ...or deleting ..or other operations ..
So ...after you make it be visible again ..I suggest to always calculate the space remaining ..and the space available ..and leave some space free...or make a small partition on it ..about 500 M and always leave it empty to avoid situation like this ..
If nothing of those above ..works ...leave it plugged in ..and go to bios amd restore the computer at the factory optimal default ....save with F10 and restart ..this should bring it back ..cause the cause may be the port in which is plugged..

the clicking noise indicates something physically wrong with the external drive ...If it has a separate power supply ..check it to see if it is proper inserted..if you have access to open the case it is in ...
another thing that you may do in the device manager is to right click on it ..and press update driver ..
And indeed this is cause by that stop ..and I am suspecting a power black out ..and not a stand by ....that is the cause you found the computer in stand by ..probably it was a sudden power stop ...
Also try to change the position it is standing on ...and see if the clicking goes away ...cause it might be cause by a shock ..or something ...I mean a blow of some kind..

Another thing ...This box..has 2 Sata 500 G 7200 normal hdd inside...so in the worse case you will be able to use the data from the hdd and so ...by connecting the hdd inside directly to the sata bus of the computer ...Cause of the clicking noise I suspect something gone wrong in the power suply of the external drive ..and that is why I suggested to open it and verify the connections ...If it has any power fuses you may check them too ...and also ..if it has a control led ..be sure is powered and is not clicking ...if it is clicking and blinking ..than it may be just something on the transformer bridge ...like an condenser...and causes the continuous current not being continuous anymore..but to alternate ..even if it has the right voltage ...In this case you will have to see what condenser is out and change it ..or get another power supply for the external drive..This may be the cause that makes it alternate in being seen and not seen any few seconds..in the rhythm of those clicks..

1. Right click on My Computer and choose Manage.

2. Navigate to Disk Management and check to see if the drive is appearing as a drive.

3. If it is showing as unallocated, right-click on it and Partition the drive.

4. If it is showing as formatted and healthy, right-click on it, choose 'change Drive Letter and Path' to assign a drive letter.

1tb external hard drive wont appear in my computer

Have you "Formatted" it before you used it, If NOT, Right Click on drive and select "Format" format NTFS. After this you should be able to use the drive as normal. Also Right Click, MY Computer, choose "Manage" when it comes up select Disk Management, and you can initialise it and format there.

My DEll PC runnig XP SP3 cannot

Hi,

Yes the drive is compatible with XP. I have seen a slightly higher than normal # of problems with their 1TB models so this may just be a batch problem. My suggestion if there's nothing crucial on the drive is to return it an purchase a different brand.

If it's not returnable you'll have to settle for asking Buffalo for a replacement. If there's crucial data on it you will need the help of a recovery pro. In that case, comment back with your Country, State and City and I will point you to a nearby Recovery facility.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

1 TB is beeping

After doing some research it seems the beeping means that there is a disk failure.

Prop off the front of the unit, remove the drive and replace it. The unit will automatically rebuild the drive, which takes about 8 hours
