SOURCE: The hard disk in drive D: is not accessible

Hope I can help you with your problem. If your hard drive was installed to be used as D: in your old computer then you will have to set it up to be D: in the new computer. This may be why it is not being recognized. You can do this by connecting it as a slave on the primary IDE cable.
Also you will need to check the jumper on the hard drive to make sure it is set in the slave position.

Error message that says Drive is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use asoftech data recovery program to recover your files.

First of all...I'm a new userof Ubunto...I'm trying to install my seagate external network harddrive on a computer with obunto but I can't use the installation CD. How do I do?

Hello Andreas,

Connect to the Internet. You will need access to the Internet to download the install files.
Open your Terminal in Ubuntu. This is the screen with the prompt where you can type commands.
Type "sudo apt-get install Gparted." Type in your root password and answer "Yes" to any prompts.

Type "sudo GParted." This will open GParted.Click the GParted menu and select "Devices." Select your external hard drive from the list. It is important that you choose your external hard drive and not the drive that has your system installed on it. One way to ensure this is to check the capacity on this drive; for example, if your internal disk is 80 GB and your external disk is 40 GB, choose the disk that is 40 GB.Click the "Devices" menu and click "Create Partition Table." Click "Advanced." From the New Partition Table menu, choose an option, depending on your system. For example, if you are dual booting Windows and Ubuntu, you may want to choose MS-DOS. If you are only running Ubuntu, choose GPT.Create a partition. Select a section of unused space and click "New."Set up your partition. For partition size, set the size of your partition--for most purposes, you can make the partition the entire capacity of the disk. Next, choose a partition type; primary is suitable for most purposes. Next, choose a file system. For sharing across a Windows system, use Fat32. For sharing with an Apple system, use HFS or HFS+. For use with an Ubuntu system only, use EXT2, EXT3 or EXT4.Click "Apply." The operations will run and your hard disk will be ready to use.

Drive only reports 56gb to partition - missing 100gb! How do I access the remaining space?

Click Start
Right-mouse click "My Computer".
Click "Manage".
Expand the "Storage" part of the tree.
Click "Disk Management".
View the diagram for your disk-drive.
Does it show the 56GB partition, followed by 100GB of "unallocated" space,
or does it show one (approximately) 160GB partition?

If the former, backup all the files in the partition (copy to an external disk-drive, or copied to DVD-recordable disks, or to another computer).
Then, use "Disk Management" to delete that "small" partition, and to define a new partition that "spans" the entire volume, and to initialize the partition.
Then, copy the "saved" files back onto the drive.

Tried to partition drive using disk mgr in windows xp sp2, won't allow a right click to partition into 2 (1) one tb partitions

Delete any existing partition on the drive.
Be careful! This will delete any "data" files on the disk-drive!

Then, you should be able to create an "extended" partition, with two "logical" drives inside that "extended" partition.

What are you trying to do or accomplish? Are you wanting to format it, access the data on it, or something else? Have you tried formattting it?

Does "to partitions" actually mean "2 partitions" or "two partitions" instead?

It might help if you stated how the drive got in that condition.

I am having an issue with my WD5000h1u-00 500 GB external drive

Read this instructions my friend
It is possible to use a Western Digital external hard drive on botha PC and a Mac. However, there are some things to keep in mind if youwant to do this. Moreover, Western Digital does not recommend doing it.
  • For both PC and Mac to be able to read the drive, it must beformatted in the FAT32 file format. In order to format to FAT32 on aMac you may need to contact Apple for support. We do have a FAT32Formatting utility for Windows that reformats WD external hard drivesto their full size, but in only one partition. The FAT32 formattingutility can be downloaded from our Downloads Library. You will find it on your WD drive's Downloads page.
  • Critical: Do not attempt toconnect any external drive to multiple computers, simultaneously; letalone to both a Mac and PC. This could quickly damage the drive'spartition and corrupt the data on the drive.

  • Sometimes, PC's won't read Mac FAT32 formatted drives, andMac's won't read PC FAT32 formatted drives. You may have to re-formatthe drive trying both the PC and Mac until you get a format that works.

  • Most WD external hard drives come pre-formatted with one large FAT32 partition, which is accessible by Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, and Mac OS 10.4 and 10.5.

  • Windows 2000, XP and Vista can only create FAT32 partitions that are 32 GB's or smaller.

  • Mac 10.4 and 10.5 can create FAT32 partitions the full size of the drive.

  • There is a 4 GB file size limit on the FAT32 file format. Thisis a file system limitation that affects both Mac's and PC's, and thereis no way around it.

  • Finally, you need to understand that if you are using the samedrive back and forth between a Mac and PC, there is always the chanceof files being corrupted. Mac's and PC's are different platforms, andtheir file systems function differently. Please keep backups of allyour files before you start sharing between Mac and PC computers.

Note: Once the data iscorrupted, that drive may no longer be recognized by one or both of thecomputers. Or, the drive may be recognized, and the data may bevisible, but you won't be able to open any files. At that point, youwill need to re-partition and reformat the drive in order for it to berestored and usable by both computers again. In the process, you willlose all the data on the drive. For that reason, you need to keep abackup of the files you are transferring between computers. At the bottom of the page, you will find links for partitioning and formatting in Windows XP and Vista, and Mac 10.4 and 10.5.

Trying to read external HD, unknown partition

I see that you have a loss partition of your External HD. It is totally damage partition.
Here's what you do Replug your External HD to another PC if it is OK. Maybe its not the same will appear on your PC too.
Unknown Partition are likely big trouble to us if we have needed files inside.
Partition on every HD, External or USB are very needed, if you lose it. Then again reformat that to use again.
Hope its not gone. Good luck!

Partition external hard drive

Yes a 1 TB externald hard drive can be partitioned. Yes its safe to store files on the drive and remove them from the computer as long as they are not files that are part of the windows system. Its not necessAry to have them on the pC and on the drive but of course its safer if you do.

You most likely need to delete the partition on your external hard drive, then create a new one and format it again. You will lose the data on your external hard drive.
1. Go to the Control Panel, click on Administrative Tools, click on Computer Management, then Disk Management. (You will need Administrators rights to carry out the following tasks)
2. On the lower Right Panel select the External drive, this will be displayed as Disk 1, Right click on this drive (MAKE SURE YOU DON"T SELECT THE C: DRIVE which will be displayed as Disk 0)
and then Delete the partition.
3. This drive should then be Unallocated, Right Click on this drive and create a New Partition.
4. Then select Primary partition.
5. Check that the maxium disk size matches close to 240000(MB) you about 10+MB in the formating process
6. Click Assign the following drive letter (let the computer select this.
7. Chick Format the partition with the following settings
