    Check any local "electrical supply" store (ask any electrician where they get their supplies) or order directly through Western Digital's web-site.

    Or, it's possible to buy a new "empty" external hard-drive case, extract your disk-drive from its current case, and mount your disk-drive into the new case -- probably costs $30 to $50.

    See: http://www.canadaram.com/3_5_ide_enclosu...

    or your local "big-box" consumer-electronics store.

Unplug the power supply from the hard drive, leave for 15 seconds.

Plug power supply back in.

Try another USB cable if that does not work.

Several things could be happening here:
1. your electronic controller in the hard case has failed.
2. you didn't properly disconnect the external hard drive in Windows > with the
"Safely Remove Hard ware and eject Media" in the task bar.
3. if you have a power supply to the USB drive it may have a damaged power connector or not supply proper power to the device.
4. the drive may not be supported by the motherboard for your PC.
5. Scan the drive with Microsoft Security Essentials" found at Microsoft.com Download ( its free). You may have a virus.

Ac adaptor will not work

Go to any computer-store, and buy a new "empty" external drive enclosure.
Then, "transplant" the disk-drive from your W.D. enclosure into the new enclosure.
All your files will remain accessible, and the new power-supply will power your disk-drive.

My western digital hard drive doesnt work. it lights up so the power is fine but it doesnt get reconised on the computer or media player. i hav alot of things on it and really need it working again......

The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program. Buy a new W.D. disk-drive through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

If it is a matter of just the power supply failing, you can get a replacement. It is possible to remove the HD and place it in a new case with a new power supply, as well. However, if you suddenly smell something burning after that, you are on the trail to adventure. That might be a burnt out diode, easy enough for a PC repair shop to replace. Or, it might be something more serious and you would need an expensive data recover shop to get back your loss. You could call Western Digital customer service and see what they have to offer in terms of a power supply or make use of the following link:

Seek replacement power supply unit to suit model ad 6008 ,wd elements external hard drive.

Either Ebay or Western digital are your best options for a replacement power supply.

However I might reccomend a new external enclosure as a more cost effective solution.

Prices are quite low and it may also allow you to put the drive in a better case.
