How do i replace pull cord on mtd 31cc tiller

Remove your recoil housing. Turn the inside to see if spring is broken. If spring is good wind it up as tight as it will go without forcing it. Once you have it wound all the way then back it off one turn or until the eyelet meets where the rope comes out. tie a knot in one end and feed through both holes. Pull the rope through till the knot is tight then attatch your handle. Once the handle is in place slowly let the rope wind itself in. pull a few times to make sure your knot is holding and reinstall on engine

I borrowed my Brothers Tecumseh Yard Machine Push Mower to mow my lawn but the pull cord wont pull. Is there a saftey or something i dont know about ?

There is a little bar up by the handle that you have to pull back toward the handle, this is the dead man lever. When released it will stop the mower by grounding out the ignition coil and braking the engine.

If this is not the problem, then let me know.

I hope this helps.

Remove the recoil assembly from the mower, there are 3 machine screws.
Remove the old rope and get matching cord, make sure you get the correct diameter, usually 3/16 or 1/4 inch, and type, I believe it should be nylon braided. Do not cut the new cord.
Use a match to light the end of the cord and once it ignites, use an old rag to pull and form the end into a point.
Notice which way the pulley in the starter assembly rotates and hand spin it in that direction until it is fairly tight. Once it is tight, rotate it into a position such that you can push the pointed end of the cord from the outside into the hole in the housing of the starter and directly into the hole on the inner pulley. Tie a tight knot in the end of the rope inside the pulley.
Remove the clamp and let the rope get rewound on the pulley. Cut the cord, point this end and run it into the handle and knot it.

The pull starter cord on my MTD Gold Series push lawnmower has broken. I have disassembled the housing and can access the feed holes for the cord. Can you give me advice on how to install the cord? This...

You have the cover off and are looking at the recoil from inside. Ok.

You need to get a length of cord equal to the old cord plus a few inches for tieing knots on the ends.

First put the length of cord through the hole on the top of the recoil cover. Feed it into the spool under the cover and get a pair of needle nose pliers to help you pull it through the hole in the spool. Now tie a knot in the end that just came through the spool and using a cigarette lighter singe the end of the rope to seal it. *(most true recoil cords have a little nylon in them that will melt to create the seal) This seal keeps the end from fraying or collecting moisture.

Now that you have one end fitting you are ready to put the handle end on. If your old handle is refittable then reuse. If not, you need to get another handle. Replacements are generally reuseable. Put the unknotted end through the new handle and tie and knot in it. Then do the lighter singe thing again.

Now the spool needs to be wound up. Looking at the spool you should see a notch on its outer edge. This is where you put the cord and use it to prewind the starter return spring. You put enough turns into it the when you release it the recoil pulls enough cord in that your handle rests in the appropriate spot *(either on top the recoil cover or on the mowers upper handle). Once you have the unit prewound you can reinstall it and try it out!

Good luck and be careful!

22" Yard Machine Push Mower: how long should i make my pull cord when i replace...

long enough that when you pull it you don't hit feel it come to the end of the rope. Short enough that it winds all the way up.
When I replace these things I use a little more than an arms length. 3 foot or so. I wind the spring till it is tight then slide a screw driver through the top to hold the wheel so I can thread the cord and knot it. Then I let it wind itself up until it stops and then add handle and pull just enough tension on it to tie the knot in the handle and make sure it pulls the handle snug to the housing.

Lawn mower pull cord

This works best with two people. Remove cover and pull cord will be inside cover. If your handle on pull cord is attatched to a metal ring up on the handle, you will need 8 foot of new pull cord.
With all the old cord removed, wind cord pulley 6 revolunations, now, have someone hold the pulley, while you string the new cord thru pulley and out the cord hole on cover. Be sure to put a knot on the end going thru pulley. Draw cord all the way thru and out of the cover. Attatch the handle and let it rewind. You will have extra cord, this will be used up going from engine up the handle. I hope this helps
