Question about Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K Top Load Washer

1 Answer

I have a Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959KL1 washer that just quit working. The panel lights up with 44 on the display as if its stuck in a default setting. The "normal" L.E.D. is lit along with the default L.E.D.s on water level, water temp., etc. When I push "start" nothing happens, no click, nothing. Two things I've noticed: The machine beeps once, about every 20 minutes, and, the "wool" L.E.D. is very dimly illuminated. Any help would be appreciated.

HI. I will post a service manual for this unit below. I will need you to run the self diagnostic mode procedure that is illustrated on page 48. This is a automatic self diagnostic procedure that the unit should run if the machine control board is functional. If you are unable to initiate this procedure, This will isolate the machine control board as the lone culprit.

Let me know the results once it is finished...

I was unable to initiate the self diagnostic mode so I purchased a new machine control board. With the new board the machine now works properly....almost. The machine still beeps intermittently (once, about every 20 mins.). When it does the estimated time remaining display illuminates with 44 as if it's turning on in standby mode all by itself. I'm suspecting it has a bad control panel. Any ideas on how to diagnose this intermittent problem?

HI. Which part number did you purchase? Was it the microcomputer or the electronic control board?

Ok, I assume it was part number 8571359. If so, try to run the Console switches and indicators test described on page 52 and 53. This procedure will confirm the failure at the control panel console. Replace the control panel console if it fails to respond to that testing procedure.

  • xr500 Aug 08, 2010

Wow. I didn't expect a reply that quick. You are correct, I got the 8571359 board. I performed the Console switches

Ok, what where the results? Did all led's respond, or did just some respond? where you able to preform any functions while touching the buttons during the test?

  • xr500 Aug 08, 2010

Yes. All the LED's responded properly. Funny thing, since I performed the Console switches

OK, what is the actual state of the unit at this point? Will it complete an entire cycle and spin out fully?

  • xr500 Aug 08, 2010

Yes. All is good at the moment. Everything is working properly.

Machine has no lights or power.

Our Whirlpool washer is GVW9959KQ0, bought in September 2001, in September 2010 it had the problem as follow. When the panel was lite up, it was always set at "44" minute, NORMAL wash, no touch area is responsive, not even STOP or START. I could turn off the panel completely by pressing STOP and "Whitest white" in sequence quickly. When the panel was shut off, I could turn on the panel again by just pressing "STOP"; But the panel was back to "44" minute, NORMAL wash. Unplugging the power did not help (see as follow). That was the washer life for a couple weeks. We left it w/o power for 24 hours, it worked again normally just for 1 wash, and it was back again to the zombie mode; left it again for 24 hours, no luck, left it again for 24 hours, worked again for just one wash. We managed to wash 3 loads during the 2-week period (just 1 wash per time). Since the washing functionality sounds and looks working well to me, I thought that the panel might be the culprit. Finally we ordered Control Panel Assembly (Parts AP3884746, it is just the panel part where we touch for washing selections w/o electronic boards behind it) at appliancepartspros.com (cost $178 regular S

Calypso beeping

The washer has a stuck keypad on the console. One of the buttons are stuck and the washer thinks you are holding that button in so it is beeping and will not allowing you to select anything else. It is hard to tell which button it is, although narrowing it down does not help anyway. The console with keypad is sold as one piece and would include the whole console facia and all the buttons. The model number provided is missing 2 digits on the end (ex. GVW9959KL1) and color is also needed for part number but they all seem to retail for $181 or close.

My kenmore elite calypso has a flashing code C1. What does this mean. Also, how can i get a manual for this washer, that explains all the codes.

C1 is not one of the normal codes. It's probably CI (upper i).
Stands for 'Instantaneous current' limit trip. Happens when there is a spike of 26 Amps intensity at the motor windings.
The manual states it may be a problem with the drive motor, thermal protector or motor controller.

check here for your stuff. make sure you put your exact model number in the box at the top. i used my machine (GVW9959KL1). absolutely awesome website and has very competitive prices, if not the best prices for parts. hope this helps.

My Whirlpool Caylpso display is stuck and will not start

You can try unplugging it for at least two hours and then re-starting. Since I moved my washer starting acting up getting stuck at various points in a cycle--sometimes 19 minutes, or 12, or 33, or 3...no rhyme or reason, no specific point in the cycle. My mover is an appliance repair guy and told me to do the unplug thing and it has worked multiple times--not that I enjoy having this happen over and over, but he told me Sears would charge a minimum of 100 to show up at the door, and I don't have that right now. Anyhow, it has only worked if I left it alone at least 2 hours---my new strategy is going to be unplugging it daily...I love the washer but this is nutty.

Yes. I replaced the control panel (the panel with all the cycle buttons on it). I downloaded the technician's manual from whirlpool and went through the troubleshooting to find the problem. Th part costs around $106.00. Just make sure you order the right color.
