Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Something is leaking water from our freezer. We keep finding small puddles on the floor under the front wheels of the fridge. We unplugged the fridge to defrost it this morning. Don't know how long that takes, but it looks like water is leaking from 2 squares on the back wall of the freezer. It is still unplugged now.

Hi,

From the symptoms you describe the water leak is due to the defrost drain being clogged. Every 8 hours or so the refrigerator will go through an automatic defrost cycle to melt the frost from the evaporator (cooling coils). The water from this process is designed to flow down a drain into a pan below the refrigerator and evaporate from the heat of the compressor and condenser.

Foreign object or dust can build up in the drain and cause the water to flow slowly and eventually freeze up.

Unplug the power cord from the wall.

To clear this drain remove the food and shelves from the freezer section. Remove the rear panel that is behind the shelves you just removed. With this panel off you will the cooling coils. Below the coils you will see a drain trough (it might be frozen over so not visible) in the center of this area will be a hole about the size of a dime. This is the defrost drain opening.

Use hot water and a turkey baster or small tube to force the hot water down the drain until it flows freely. It may take a while and lots of water so have some towels to catch the run off.

Once it is clear you will be set to reassemble and load the food back in.

Here is a link to more details I put together on this subject

Clogged Defrost Drain.

All depends on how much water is collecting. A lot of water indicated a leak from the ice maker. A small amount and it's probably a clogged condensate drain. Here's a YouTube video on a different brand showing a clogged drain, your may be similar (or not), but it might give you an idea as to where to look. Refrigerator dripping water inside FIX

GE Profile leaking onto floor

Clean the drain pan and drain line in the back of the freezer section behind the cover underneath the evaporator coil. (hint: use turkey baster with hot water) Make sure water drains when you pour it in. If it doesn't - also clean drain tube on the back of the unit behind the cover. When done - put the tube exactly where it was.
Good luck! :)

If you have an ice maker, check for a leak in the water line. If no ice maker, there could be a leak in the pan for the defrost water, or the drain hose is out of position. Also, check to see if the water is actually leaking out from the freezer door. That would indicate a clogged drain. The bottom inside the freezer may have water, or ice on it. If so, suspect the clogged drain.

Water is leaking from under GE side by side from time to time.

This _may_ be normal behaviour. When the freezer defrost element is heating, ice that melts off of the evaporator coils in the freezer will drain out of a small opening at the back of the freezer compartment and into a catch pan under the refrigerator. If that pan has other debris - cat hair, napkins, etc - the water may overflow the pan onto the floor.

Get behind the fridge, remove the bottom panel (at least that is how I can access it on my GE side-by-side), and see what you can see.

While you are back there, it is a good idea to clean the dust from the condenser coil, or use a shop vac to blow the dust from the coil.

Remember your electrical safety and unplug the fridge first, and be careful what you touch. I assume the compressor uses a large start capacitor that could still be energized even with the fridge unpluged.

Water puddling in bottom of freezer and freezing

the drain in the back of the freezer is probably full of ice. you need to pull out panel and use heat from a blow dryer to unplug the drain. then take a small gauge copper wire long enough to extend into the drain a couple of inches and loop it around the black heating element then when it goes yhrough defrost it should keep this from reaccuring

Water leaking underneath refrigerator/water freezing in bottom of freezer

I'm dealing with the same problem right now with the same refrigerator. The cold water tank (for the front dispenser) has a hole in it that leaks every time someone dispenses water from the front door. You will find the water tank behind the top slide-out drawer in the fridge. The leaked water flows down one of the water tubes through a hole in the bottom of the fridge and onto the floor. I'll bet you have the same problem. Good Luck.
